The Hunger Games! Wilkinson Needs To Find New Way To Win

Hungerford manager Bobby Wilkinson thinks his players are fitter than they’ve ever been – and it’s a good job they are, he says.

Town are about to embark on their second season in the Vanarama National League South after a highly credible sixth place finish in 2016/17.

Wilkinson knows to have any chance of a repeat his players must be at their maximum.

He insisted: “We’re fitter and sharper than ever. I try and raise the bar every summer and we’re achieving what I want us to. It’s very simple, we have to be fitter, and stronger. We have to find new ways because we’ve been here a year now.

“People may think we’re not going to be able to match what we did last season and I understand why – the players were absolutely fantastic.

“But we’ve signed five, which is more than the two or three I usually add every summer.

“I think a lot of that is to do with the strength of the league. Squads are bigger than they were and to compete you’ve to be ready for every challenge which comes your way.

“I feel we’re moving in the right direction and the players levels give me a lot of confidence.

“Pre-season I’ve been very pleased with. We’ve worked them hard but we’ve won seven matches and that brings a lot of positivity.”

Hungerford open up at Dartford this weekend and then have home games with Weston and Hemel.
