The Back In-Form Gulls Have A Nose For Survival

Torquay United can smell a whiff of a survival scent in their nostrils.

Manager Gary Owers says the aroma of safety is suddenly overpowering - but knows there is much to do before they can start to really talk up their chances.

The seemingly doomed club have given themselves hope from nowhere and are now only four points, plus a large number of goals, away from jumping out of the bottom four.

A return of ten points from four games have allowed confidence to build that they still have a chance of escaping from the clutches of the National League South.

Owers have given an interview to Devon Live where he outlined the next month ahead.

If Torquay can win against Dover on Saturday, following on from success vs Woking, Chester and Leyton Orient, then hope turns to realism.

"We haven't done anything yet and we still have it all to do, but we have given ourselves a chance, and I think the lads can smell it as well,” he told the website.

“Our aim is to give the opposition problems, and we are now.

“I felt that they (Dover) bullied us a bit at home (the 0-2 defeat in October). They are one of the teams that has beaten us convincingly, so that will be a massive challenge.

“But we have more movement and more energy going forward now than we had then.”

After Saturday’s trio to Dover, Torquay then welcome AFC Fylde on Tuesday night.
