The Silkmen are champions following this afternoon’s 2-0 victory at Eastleigh.
They are back in the Football League for the first time since 2012 and it was at that traumatic period in their history that things took a turn for the worst.
Financial issues dogged the club before eventually they got their house in order and Mr Macclesfield was there to see it all unfold.
Today, he and the club got the reward for all the blood, sweat and tears that were required to keep the Cheshire club in existence.
Askey played for Macc for 19 years and after first walking into Moss Rose in 1984 he’s not been able to drag himself away since.
“It’s a great achievement, but the biggest achievement is that we still have a club to take into League Two,” he told us after the full-time whistle confirmed their return to the 92.
“So many people worked so hard, day and night. We didn’t think this day would come. This is for the people who kept the club going, the supporters, the sponsors and the town. The players have done everyone proud, this is for all of them.
“I didn’t think it was possible. You don’t even think about it really, you just try and get things ready for the season and see what happens.
“It gives everybody hope. To do what this set of players have done, thrown together in the summer when we only had three players signed. It shows that anybody can do it."
Asked to sum up how it feels, Askey wasn’t actually sure how to digest the day!
“It’s just pure elation,” he said. “I’m still trying to take it in and I don’t really know how I feel! Every player I have had has supported me.
“It’s my greatest achievement, especially in management. It’s a great day for the club and to do this when the odds were stacked against us is something we should always remember.”
Macclesfield will get their hands of the trophy at home to Dagenham & Redbridge next Saturday.
