The Team of the Weekend signs off for the season and we’ve been delighted to help showcase the talent of so many over the past nine months.
It’s been a year of fantastic stories and even better performances.
We’ve selected the stand out 11 players and named five substitutes from the final day of the Vanarama National League campaign.
But as we all know, football is the sport not everyone agrees on all the time!
Why not join the debate on twitter @TheNationalLge following what was a tense and dramatic last day of the season.
The National League Team of the Weekend:
Goalkeeper: Sam Johnson (FC Halifax Town)
A string out outstanding saves preserved a final day point for the Shaymen at Maidstone. He’s enjoyed a great season between the sticks.
Defender: Carl Magnay (Hartlepool)
It’s not been the season they wanted in truth but Hartlepool ended it in style. Magnay was a great as their very colourful fans behind the goal at Tranmere!
Defender: Ryan Astles (Chester)
Chester went down, but they had pride at the death. Astles steered the ship to a fine three points at Barrow.
Defender: Keith Lowe (Macclesfield)
He’s been immense all season, so you didn’t think his standards would drop for the final day did you?
Defender: Louis John (Sutton United)
He’s improved as the season has gone on but it was another neat and tidy display against Aldershot as Sutton secured a midweek rest.
Midfielder: Akil Wright (Wrexham)
He can hold his head high despite the Red Dragons missing out on the play-offs. The 0-0 draw with AFC Fylde was the 19th stalemate of the season.
Midfielder: Sam Matthews (Eastleigh)
Walks in. His fine hat-trick at Solihull Moors proves why he has been one of the Spitfires’ best players this season. Captain.
Midfielder: Giancarlo Gallifuoco (Dover Athletic)
Ultimately it was a day of disappointment despite a win at Woking but Gallifuoco scored and was the driving force as Dover did all their could.
Midfielder: Sam Barrett (Maidenhead United)
Two goals and so good was his performance than Neil Smith had to change his team around early on because of the threat posed.
Striker: Macauley Bonne (Leyton Orient)
He’s been a regular in the Team of the Weekend and he’s back in for a final time this season. A goal and another energetic display for the O’s go-to man.
Striker: Scott Wilson (Macclesfield)
He’s had to be patient but showed his quality from the bench to score twice and ice the championship cake for the Silkmen.
Substitutes:
Kane Smith (Boreham Wood)
Nana Owusu (Maidenhead)
Tom Bolarinwa (Sutton United)
Jobi McAnuff (Leyton Orient)
Chris Zebroski (Eastleigh)
