Team Of The Weekend: The National League

By Sam Elliott

It’s the time of the season when nerves must be held with every point so crucial.

There’s little room for error now with April well under way as the weeks tick down. Nobody wants to look back with regrets and it was another big weekend in the National League season.

The Team of the Weekend is jam-packed full of headline makers from Saturday’s matches.

Scoring goalkeepers (well, so he claims!) and on-form forwards are joined by the defenders whose shut outs were worth their weight in gold.

To select our Super 16, we call on managers, club officials and reporters around the grounds to piece together the top team of the day.

We have the North and South to come on Monday as well as a Team of Tuesday night - you can’t take your eyes off the action!

Goalkeeper: Graham Stack (Eastleigh)
Was it his equaliser? He is certain it is. The veteran keeper was brilliant at both ends but take a look for yourself on our twitter feed or highlights section.

Defender: Adam Buxton (Tranmere Rovers)
Rovers showed no mercy to rivals Chester and Buxton was a man who was determined not to be beaten as Tranmere closed the gap.

Defender: Matty Brown (FC Halifax)
The Shaymen were superb as Boreham Wood were beaten - Brown won every header and every tackle.

Defender: Seth Twumasi (Maidstone United)
The Stones are edging towards safety now and a good point at Guiseley was helped by his assured display as he broke up the hosts’ positive play.

Defender: Josh Staunton (Woking)
How important could his goal and performance at Dagenham & Redbridge prove to be for the struggling Cards?

Midfielder: Adam McDonnell (Aldershot)
Shots’ MOTM and there wasn’t much doubt about that as Gary Waddock’s men left it very late to finally see off stubborn Maidenhead United.

Midfielder: Corey Whitely (Ebbsfleet)
He was at the heart of everything good about the Fleet’s brilliant comeback against leaders Macclesfield Town.

Midfielder: Jonny Smith (AFC Fylde)
A stunning goal set the Coasters on their way for a classic come-from-behind victory over title-chasing Sutton United.

Striker: Jermaine Hylton (Solihull Moors)
He didn’t score, but what an impressive performance. The Moors are finally out of the bottom four after winning late at Hartlepool United.

Striker: Andy Cook (Tranmere)
Surely in the best form of his career now. A bulldog once again as Tranmere found a way through Chester and gave Macclesfield something to think about.

Striker: Macauley Bonne (Leyton Orient)
Two goals, or was it three? Bonne grabbed the matchball after the 4-1 win over AFC Fylde - but the dubious goals panel will decide if he has to give it back!

Substitutes:
Mike Fondop-Talom (FC Halifax)
Kyle Storer (Solihull Moors)
Ebou Adams (Leyton Orient)
Anthony Jeffrey (Dover Athletic)
Danny Rowe (AFC Fylde)
