Team Of The Weekend: The National League

By Sam Elliott

Five weeks to go, and the men are in the process of being separated from the boys in the Vanarama National League.

Time is running out and every performance really is going to count. There’s tension in the air and excitement in the stands.

Saturday’s matches had plenty of talking points and with lines fine, every point could well made all the difference with April on the horizon.

We have pieced together the Team of the Weekend after studying all the action closely.

Our process is simple. We call on our contacts across the grounds to put together the 16 players we feel deserve recognition for their performance.

If we’ve missed someone who played a blinder we want to know! Join the debate on twitter as the season reaches its exciting climax @TheNationalLge

Nathan Ashmore (Ebbsfleet)
Some wonderful saves from the eccentric Ebbsfleet goalkeeper - with one in particular in the second half stealing the show. Didn’t deserve the late blow of a Maidstone leveller.

Jamie Reckord (Solihull Moors)

The 26-year-old shone as Solihull took a good point from FC Halifax, even if it didn’t quite move them out of the bottom four.

Shaun Pearson (Wrexham)
He says the Dragons aren’t scoring enough goals and they are drawing too many - so the centre-back does something about it himself! Worthy captain for the day.

Will Evans (Aldershot)
Don’t underestimate how strong Boreham Wood’s attack is this season. Evans, and his backline, limited their attacks and took no prisoners.

Kevin Lokko (Dover Athletic)

It may not have been a great game, but the on-loan Stevenage player stood firm to take a point home from the very long trip.

Daniel Sparkes (Dagenham & Red)
Many people though the Daggers would be breakfast for AFC Fylde, the league’s top scorers. But John Still’s side too the game to the Coasters - Sparkes was flying as out-of-form Dagenham won well.

Ollie Norburn (Tranmere Rovers)
Worked very hard and kept the Rovers attacks coming. There was a lot to like about his performance from a Tranmere point of view.

James Brophy (Leyton Orient)
A fine third for Orient but it wasn’t must his lovely goal that made him Man of the Match. Dominated the midfield in front of over 5,500 at Brisbane Road.

Ross Stearn (Sutton United)

Back at Gander Green Lane and back into a fight for the title. His classy goal from distance ultimately proved to the the difference against Chester.

Macauley Bonne (Leyton Orient)

Back in goalscoring form and back in the Team of the Weekend. Too difficult to contain for Woking and earn special praise from manager Justin Edinburgh.

Andy Cook (Tranmere Rovers)
In his best form for many years. His 35-yarder dipper was worth turning on the TV for. Watch out Danny Rowe!

Substitutes:
Sam Johnson (FC Halifax)
Jake Gallagher (Aldershot)
Harry Pritchard (Maidenhead)
Craig Eastmond (Sutton United)
Chike Kandi (Dagenham & Red)
