Team Of The Weekend: The National League

There were plenty of goals and plenty of big performances across the division so there's plenty of talent to choose from.

We select the top 16 players from this weekend’s top-flight games as the action continues to heat up.

Unfortunately, we can’t be at every match so rely on our eyes and ears up and down the country to make sure our selections are as close to spot on as possible.

The National League Team of the Weekend:

Goalkeeper - Scott Loach (Hartlepool United)

Pools’ number one had to be at his best to make a number of important stops. He helped keep out Boreham Wood as Hartlepool picked up a vital point.

Defender - Aswad Thomas (Sutton United)

The full-back went close a couple of times for the U’s, including having a header cleared off the line, and defended well against a dangerous Solihull attack.

Defender - Roger Johnson (Bromley)

The experienced centre-half marshalled the Bromley back four well on Saturday and young loanee Luke Woolfenden also impressed. A late winner against Bromley kept the Ravens in the play-off hunt.

Defender - Josh Hare (Maidstone United)

Who else? Hare’s 88th-minute goal for the Stones wasn’t a classic but it put an end to their 17-game unbeaten run. He also did his defensive duties as Maidstone finally tasted victory.

Midfield - Sam Wedgbury (Wrexham)

The combative midfielder helped drive his team forward in the cross-border derby. A reliable performer for the Dragons, Wedgbury once again impressed in the big win over rivals Chester.

Midfield - Matty Kosylo (FC Halifax Town)

What a season Kosylo has had for the Shaymen. His stock continues to rise and he scored two stunning strikes to down Woking and give new boss Jamie Fullarton a big first victory.

Midfield - Paddy McLaughlin (Gateshead)

The classy midfielder pulled all the strings for the Heed as they recorded their biggest ever win in the National League. Poor Maidenhead were torn to shreds and McLaughlin was one of the main instigators.

Midfield - Mitch Hancox (Macclesfield Town)

Goals continue to come from all over the pitch for the Silkmen and Hancox got the important equaliser against Barrow. Macc then went on to pick up three more vital points.

Forward - Danny Rowe (AFC Fylde)

The National League’s top scorer was at his best on Saturday, netting a hat-trick inside 20 minutes against Aldershot. The cherry on the cake? It was a perfect hat-trick too as the Coasters ran wild.

Forward - Danny Johnson (Gateshead)

Rowe wasn’t the only striker to take home a match ball on Saturday. Johnson was clinical at the International Stadium to help sink Maidenhead and claim his first professional treble.

Forward - Andy Cook (Tranmere Rovers)

A close one between Cook and his team-mate James Norwood, who makes the bench. The experienced frontman scored twice, including the opener, to put Dagenham & Redbridge to the sword.
