Team Of The Weekend: The National League

By Sam Elliott

The games are coming thick and fast - and so are the accolades for the National League’s finest.

Here is the Team of the Weekend for Saturday’s action in Non-League’s top flight after another eventful round of matches.

We can’t be at every game, so like always we take advice from managers, journalists and club officials when piecing together our select 16.

We name a starting XI plus of course five substitutes from around the grounds and rightly honour the players for their outstanding performances.

So here’s the side of Saturday - if you think we’ve overlooked a player who stood out, make sure you put in a good word for them and join the debate on twitter @TheNationalLge

Goalkeeper: Sam Johnson (FC Halifax)
Not too many would have had the Shaymen down for a point let alone a clean sheet at Dover and their glovesman was inspired.

Defender: Jack Holland (Bromley)
What is it with Bromley and Leyton Orient? After hitting them for six in the opening weeks of the season, they killed the O's winning run on Saturday. Holland performed perfectly.

Defender: Tom Champion (Boreham Wood)
Wood exorcised the ghost of their last home game - a 4-0 thrashing by Sutton. Champion took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Defender: Dave Winfield (Ebbsfleet)
It’s like he hadn’t been away. Winfield’s return from injury has been seamless. So unlucky not to have his performance rewarded with three points.

Defender: Kieran Kennedy (Macclesfield)
One of the Silkmen’s unsung heroes. The former Manchester City and Leicester City player is showing why he has such an impressive CV.

Midfielder: Ollie Banks (Tranmere Rovers)
A near perfect performance from the midfielder as Rovers rolled over Guiseley. Tranmere have won five from five and everyone is taking note.

Midfielder: Darren Carter (Solihull Moors)
Moors shock win at Barrow keeps their season alive. Carter showed all his experience to drive the bottom club to three crucial points.

Midfielder: Danny Whitaker (Macclesfield)
Manager John Askey revealed they call the 37-year-old Benjamin Button. They may as well name him after a pricey fine wine as he looks to be getting better as he gets older.

Midfielder: Jack Muldoon (AFC Fylde)
Saved the day for the Coasters at Maidenhead. Fylde were slipping nervously towards trouble but their three points in Berkshire could turn their season.

Striker: Aaron Collins (Maidstone)
Wasn’t on the winning side but should have been. Could have had a hat-trick instead of one goal at Aldershot. No wonder Jay Saunders wants him to stay.

Striker: Connor Jennings (Tranmere)
Talk about your December form guy. No goals before the month began, then he scored in four straight games with six in total. His latest doubled helped gut Guiseley at Prenton Park.

Substitutes:
Ben Chorley (Bromley)
Jamie Reckord (Solihull Moors)
Keiran Murtagh (Boreham Wood)
Mason Bloomfield (Dagenham)
Chris Zebrokski (Eastleigh)
