Team Of The Weekend: The National League

By Sam Elliott

The time has come to hit the phones and gather all the information we possibly can from all over the country.

The Team of the Weekend doesn’t just pick itself, you know.

Here’s what we’ve come up with after leaning on the expertise of managers, journalists and club officials - your National League select 16 has been chosen.

With the FA Cup in full flow, it’s been even more of a challenge but we’ve put together the side which shone on Saturday in another exciting afternoon of league action.

We’ll have the National League South and North sides later on - and don’t forget to join the debate on twitter.

Goalkeeper: Chris Dunn (Wrexham)
Dean Keates promised a reaction following last weekend’s set-back at his team delivered. Commanding Dunne played a massive part.

Defence: Sean McGinty (Torquay)
Against his free-scoring former club Aldershot, the defender stood out. Torquay now have three clean sheets back-to-back.

Defence: Liam Daly (Solihull Moors)
The winning goal and a clean sheet against one of the biggest clubs in the National League for the bottom side. Not a bad afternoon’s work for Liam Daly.

Defence: Keith Lowe (Macclesfield)
How important could his late winner at Hartlepool United turn out to be come the end of the season? A big moment for the Silkmen.

Defence: Moussa Diarra (Barrow)
The giant Frenchman gave another towering performance at FC Halifax. Barrow have gone from hopeless away from home to winning their last three on the road.

Midfield: Kieron Cadogan (Sutton United)
There’s a lot to be said about how well he’s taken to the National League. Another fearsome showing down the Gander Green Lane wing sent Sutton back to the top of the table.

Midfield: Mitch Brundle (Dover Athletic)
The Whites may look back of their great recovery at Bromley as the result which kick-started things. Brundle scored and was an important part of the comeback.

Midfield: Harry Panayiotou (Barrow)
The midfielder’s displays since Ady Pennock arrived have been key to the club’s resurgence. He impressed again at FC Halifax.

Midfield: Anthony Jeffery (Dover Athletic)
A super sub performance. Chris Kinnear could have done another great bit of transfer business getting the winger on loan from Sutton United.

Striker: Chris Holroyd (Wrexham)
His slow start to life in north Wales is now long forgotten. A goal and a Man of the Match performance sets Wrexham up well for a trip to the club he joined from in the summer, Macclesfield Town.

Striker: Jack Holland (Bromley)
It’s always helpful when a player can play up front as well as in defence. Even more when he’s just as good at the other end of the field. Unlucky to not be on the winning team.

Substitutes:
Alex Davey (Torquay United)
George Fowler (Aldershot)
Jamey Osborne (Solihull Moors)
Simon Walton (Sutton United)
Jordan White (Barrow)
