Team Of The Weekend: The National League

By Sam Elliott

It was another fast and frantic Vanarama National League weekend - and the time has come for us to make a big decision.

The second ever Team of the Weekend needs to be picked, and we’ve been working long and hard to ensure the selection process is as close to perfect as possible.

Each week we talk to managers, officials and journalists up and down the country as we pick out 11 starting players and five subs for our Super 16 of Saturday afternoons.

Because of the FA Trophy, we’re limiting things to the National League for this week but with South and North will be well-covered again next Monday.

After a winning start last week, we’ve taken a risk and dabbled with our formation. It’s an adventurous 3-5-2.

Do you agree with our selection or debate the players chosen? Get in touch and join the discussion on twitter @TheNationalLge

Goalkeeper: Jay Lynch (AFC Fylde)
Walking into the team after his display at one of the most difficult grounds to take anything from - Dover’s Crabble.

Defence: Callum Reynolds (Aldershot)

Another player who put paid to a title chaser. Wrexham found no way past him.

Defender: Jack Hollands (Bromley)
With the form Barrow are in, Bromley had a huge task but Hollands was brilliant and deserves his place.

Defence: Simon Downer (Sutton United)
Back on top thanks to a gritty win at Guiseley, Sutton stuck to the simple things and Downer used all his experience

Midfield: Fabian Robert (Aldershot)

The 28-year-old Frenchman covered every blade of grass and didn’t allow Wrexham a minute to get their game going.

Midfield: Luke Young (Torquay United)
Played a crucial role in the Gulls’ vital victory over relegation rivals Leyton Orient. There’s more to come from him, you feel.

Midfield: Adam Mekki (Bromley)

The stand out player up at Barrow and made the long trip worth it for the fans

Midfield: Luke Coulson (Ebbsfleet)
Another determined display at times left Hartlepool United dancing to his tune. Scored and assisted.

Midfield: Ryan Lloyd (Macclesfield)
Even if Macc did suffer late on, any player who scores from inside their own half is good enough for us!

Striker: Michael Cheek (Dagenham)
Dagenham’s goals are a lot like the London buses which glide past their stadium. His two TV strikes eased the Daggers home.

Striker: James Norwood (Tranmere)
Jumping up the goal charts and just edged team-mate Andy Cook from our starting side.

Substitutes:
Jake Hibbs (FC Halifax)
Zaine Francis-Angol (AFC Fylde)
Sean Shields (Ebbsfleet)
Tom Champion (Boreham Wood)
Andy Cook (Tranmere Rovers)
