Sutton United Are Top Of The National League 'On Merit'

Sutton United manager Paul Doswell knows his team are top of the Vanarama National League on merit.

After five matches, there is an unexpected leader. Watch Highlights Here.

Sutton, who of course shot to fame last season during their FA Cup run which saw the team beat Forest Green, Dartford, Cheltenham, Wimbledon and Leeds before bowing out to Arsenal, went top of the lot on Saturday.

A last minute winning goal from substitute Kieron Cadogan at Chester took them there. They won the game 3-2.

Doswell knows all about keeping expectations in check but has no intention of not enjoying the moment.

He said: "There is no doubt we have had a fantastic few years together. The club is in a great place and I'm enjoying seeing everyone here with smiles on their faces.

"The players have earned the right to be where they are and they should be delighted with that.

"When we went 2-0 up I really don't think it flattered us at all.

"Chester work very hard and they got themselves back into the game but we threw some fresh legs on and it made the difference.

"Thankfully it paid off. It was great feeling to hear we are top of the league but of course it's very early days. Not that we shouldn't be proud of our achievements."

Sutton are back in action on Saturday as they look to cement top spot.

The U's play host to Maidstone United, a match involving two teams who play on 3G pitches.
