The U’s have fallen out of the title race in recent weeks thanks to a run of four defeats in five matches.
Tuesday night’s 2-1 reverse at FC Haliax Town saw Sutton drop to third and they now have four games left to rediscover some form before the play-offs.
Assistant manager Ian Baird has labelled Saturday’s home match against Hartlepool United a ‘must-win’ and has told the U’s players to stand up and be counted.
“To lose the game in the manner we did was very disappointing bearing in mind our second half performance,” Baird told SUFCtv after the Halifax defeat.
“The first half performance was unacceptable. Once again we didn’t live up to what sides are doing to us; the way they competed against us. Unfortunately, that has let us down over the past two or three weeks.
“It’s all in our hands and it’s still all to play. We’ve got a must-win game on Saturday and then a trip to Maidenhead on Tuesday.
“We had some strong words for the players at half time and the end. We’ve been on a journey, we’re little old Sutton and haven’t had an ounce of praise off anybody whatsoever.
“We certainly got praise off other managers but we haven’t been able to handle the intensity of other sides recently. Now we’re in a situation of sink or swim and if history tells us anything, the group of players here have always swum.”
