Ultra-marathon hero Kevin Webber (pictured right) knows how to pick his moments. His latest quest to support Vanarama and raise awareness and a bit of money for Prostate Cancer UK could have come at a more weather-friendly time.
The football fanatic certainly enjoys a challenge. The torrential rain and wind battering the country is nothing. Let’s not forget in 2014 he was told he was likely to have two years left to live.
More than five years later the 54-year-old is still feeling like there are no life limits. This is the man who last year completed a week-long tour of many of the north’s National League clubs.
This time around, he is getting his trainers back on in the south as he left Bromley this morning, taking in Dartford, Welling, Ebbsfleet and Maidstone United before landing in Dover on Friday night.
Let’s hope he’s been able to treat himself to some new footwear. He’s only just finished the March For Men, a 100-mile mission alongside Hartlepool United fanatic Jeff Stelling.
“Trust me to do this when it’s not due to stop raining!” he told us before he set off on three marathons in three days, more than 80 miles in testing conditions.
“I want to wear the shirt of the clubs I’m walking to but I’ll need some weather appropriate clothing too. Problem is, when you wear that heavy duty stuff walking for so long there is just as much wet inside of them that there is on the outside!
“Every day is going to be miserable but I can’t wait. Being involved really gives me a reason to live - it’s something I get so much out of.”
Vanarama are doing their bit to help Kevin battle the elements. He will spend each night in an orange camper van being driving to meet him late on each day.
He will be officially ending his quest at Dover on Saturday and will be sure to be warmly welcomed by the BT Sport team who will see him over the finishing line.
“It’s quite fitting that I ended last season’s journey watching FC Halifax and home to Chesterfield and I will be doing the same this time with them down at Dover,” he adds.
“Like last year, it’s not a fund-raiser as such, but every penny is always gratefully received.
“I hope a few people see me, take a second to have a chat and if one person goes to the doctor - or whose friend or family member is then encouraged to go to the doctor - then it’s all worth it.
“This is also about getting into clubs, and putting across the message of how important a trip to the doctors is and how speed is so crucial.
“If your club averages say 800 supporters, 100 will come into close contact with the disease. As things stand, 20 of them will die.
“That is a really big number of people. If we can go some way to getting that figure down by a little bit of raising awareness then it’s a fight we’ll win.”
