Stones Answer Their Critics With Vital Victory At Home

Jay Saunders reckons his side’s forward thinking was key to their crucial victory over AFC Fylde.

The Stones won 1-0 thanks to Blair Turgott’s first-half strike - a victory that moved them up to 50 points.

They are not mathematically safe yet but their status could be secured with three points at relegated Chester next Saturday.

Promotion-chasing Fylde were always going to provide a stern test for Saunders’ men but he says the Stones answered their critics in the best possible way.

“It was a very good performance,” Saunders told the club’s website. “I thought we were excellent for 95 minutes and got what we deserved.

“With the amount of chances we created was positive and we caused them a lot of problems. We built up this week and said we were going for it - we had to.

“Everything we worked on on Thursday with the front three worked. The work rate from the front lads gave us a platform for the rest of the team as well.

“I don’t want to get carried away because we want to back this up with another victory at Chester which will be tough. We took a lot of stick after Tuesday - which was deserved - but we all responded.”
