Spireites Get Their Teeth Into Tigers Manager Rowe

Chesterfield’s short search for a new manager is over after making their move for Gloucester City boss James Rowe.

He replaces John Pemberton, who parted company with the club last week after another campaign that has seen the Spireites struggle at the wrong end of the table.

Rowe has impressed in the National League North, taking the Tigers seven points clear following a summer of impressive recruitment.

The 37-year-old was granted permission to speak to Chesterfield on Monday and personal terms were quickly agreed.

Thrilled Rowe told the club’s website: “I’m delighted to have got it over the line and I’m really looking forward to getting out on the grass tomorrow with the players.

“The heritage of the club is outstanding and the challenge is to get the club back to where it should be.

“With the facilities, the fanbase and the squad, the club should be a lot higher in the table and the first challenge is to get some consistency going and then the sky is the limit.

“I’m excited after listening to Mike (Goodwin) and John (Croot) and the board and now we need to move forward together and I am sure we will.”

Kevin Davies and Lee Turnbull, two of the club’s legendary players, were on the interview panel and were impressed by Rowe’s ambition.

The Tigers placed player-coach Jake Cole in charge for Tuesday night's match at Gateshead.

They confirmed: “Gloucester City can today confirm that James Rowe has left the club.

“James took over the Managerial position following Mike Cook's departure in 2019 and leaves with City seven points clear at the top of the National League North. The search for a new 1st Team Manager now begins.

“We'd like to thank James for his time at the Club and wish him the best of luck for the future.”
