Spew For Scunny! Butler Says It'll Be Bodies On The Line

Scunthorpe United’s squad have been told to brace for a tummy-twisting summer as manager Andy Butler ensures they’re in tip-top condition.

The new boss is a month into the job and has been discussing what’s ahead as the club look for another Vanarama National League North challenge.

The 40-year-old has been promoted from his role as First Team Coach following the departure of Jimmy Dean, Chris Plummer and Ant Coombe at the end of last season.

Following defeat to Boston United in last month’s play-off semi-final, the club made a change and said they are looking “towards sustainability, and bringing expenditure in line with the level what the football club can afford”.

Butler knows that won’t exactly temper expectation - and wants his players to hit the ground running.

In an in-depth chat ahead of their return in the next few weeks, the new man says bodies will be put on the line from the off to give them the best possible chance come August.

“I want them to be a fit and robust team that represents Scunthorpe,” he said on the club’s YouTube channel. “In pre-season there will be a few people breaking down, there will be a few people puking up.

“It’s going to have to be a little old school, but there will be some sports science involved.

“It’s not always going to be football based, but we’re geared towards the 10th of August. We want to be strong and we want to be organsied and give ourselves a chance of success.”

He spoke about his first five weeks at the helm and says a troubled period for the club should be driving everyone on.

“It’s been an eye-opener,” he added. “I’ve learned a lot so far. It’s been worthwhile and we’re getting there. It’s been really really busy.

“There’s pressure, but I’ll take that off the players. If you want a big job you have got to have pressure on your shoulders. I’ve had that my whole career.

“I want to give something back. The club nearly went bust last year, overall it wasn’t a bad season, it’s important to remember that. To come second after nearly being shut down, many will class that as a success.”
