Special Feature: Only A Fitting Pilgrims Farewell Will Do

By Sam Elliott

Craig Elliott has taken responsibility for ensuring Boston United fans’ lasting memory of York Street is one they will never forget.

The club are nearing an emotional goodbye to their historic home, and hope to be playing at their new Wyberton base in just over twelve months.

Leaving after nearly 90 years will be painful for some and the Pilgrims manager wants to make the process as comfortable as possible.

In the latest of our special summer features, Elliott has told us about the importance of not moving without any bad memories.

He has detailed exactly what extra measures he will be taking to ensure the club have an enjoyable last year at the Jakeman’s Stadium in the National League North.

He explained: “It won’t be easy leaving the place. York Street means so much to the supporters and it’s our last season here.

“It will be very sad when the last ball is kicked at the ground, it’s a brilliant stadium - and although this is such an exciting time to be involved, I know we have to have a good year.

“The pressure is on to make sure the fans take away the best possible memories and that’s very important to me.

“We need to have a fitting final year here. Last season our away form was good but at home it wasn’t. We’re not kidding ourselves - it’s got to be better this time around.

“We’re a former Football League club and while there are a number of them in this league, we feel like we could take Boston back one day - this is such a big few years for the club.”

Steps are already being taken to make sure that happens.

“There are a number of things we can do,” he outlined as he looks ahead to what he says will be a “very demanding” division.

“We’re back in earlier. We’ve already had two sessions - maybe our fitness wasn’t where it should have been last season and being in already should help in that area.

“It’s about learning from your mistakes. A few of our signings didn’t pay off last close season. It didn’t work.

“This year, I want to have a complete summer. I’m more than happy with what we’ve done.

“Especially because this is such an historic year we can’t leave any stone unturned.”

He’s certainly worked overtime to make sure some solid signings have come through the door.

Dominic Knowles, the Harrogate striker, has joined in-demand Tom Clare in attack while Alfreton’s Luke Shiels should make them tougher to breach.

“We’ve got most of the players we wanted,” Elliott added.

“You can’t get every single player you try for - it’s been a really competitive market and teams are working hard to make sure they are stronger.

“We’re still looking one or two more defensive options but we’re in a good place.”
