South Will Be The Toughest Division Yet Warns King

New manager Steve King wants to entertain Welling United fans all the way to the National League.

The Wings’ new boss is no stranger to the upper echelons of the National League South having tasted success in the league previously with Lewes and Farnborough.

Welling finished tenth last season, eight points away from the play-off places but their new boss spoke about his expectations for this season - and wants to make his team easy on the eye.

He told the club’s website: “After meeting with Mark [Goldberg], I liked the idea of what he’s trying to do and the project.

“My aim as manager is to get the club into the National League. Our aim will be a minimum of the play-offs despite this year being the toughest National League South since it started.

“I really feel I can bring attacking and entertaining football”.

Despite being one of the league’s most successful managers, King was actually relegated last term with Whitehawk.

But he oversaw a dramatic, mid-season overhaul of the squad which saw his side finish in exceptional form.

Now he wants to be managing at the right end of the National League South table.

“I will sit down with the whole squad and talk to them about my thoughts and plans,” he adds. “I know every player at this level, so I don’t need to assess them and watch them, which helps”

“I try not to use loans where possible, especially starting from fresh. I like to get a core so they get used to playing with each other.

“I don’t mind where they come from, as long as they put on the shirt and give everything.”
