Something For The Weekend: Vanarama National League

By Steven Coney

Saturday could be a historic weekend in the Vanarama National League with Macclesfield Town on the verge of securing promotion.

Every game at this stage of the season has plenty riding on it so it’s difficult to pick out just three fixtures to focus on.

But we’ve done our best. Points have never been so crucial - here are a trio of games this weekend that will get the juices flowing.

Macclesfield Town v Leyton Orient

The latest of BT Sport’s National League offerings could see the destination of the National League title decided.

The Silkmen moved a step closer to promotion with a fantastic 2-0 win at Boreham Wood in midweek. They know that a win on Saturday, coupled with Tranmere Rovers dropping points, would see them crowned champions. Orient are better than their League position suggests but you wouldn’t bet against John Askey’s men.

Orient are one of the few clubs with little to play for on paper but players will be keen to put in good showings to ensure they are part of Justin Edinburgh’s plans moving forward. They’ve won three in a row now and are comfortably mid-table. Orient don’t concede many so expect this to be a tight game.

Tranmere Rovers v Aldershot Town

Two of the division’s best do battle at Prenton Park and both will be hoping for three big points with the play-offs fast approaching.

Tranmere look to be hitting top form at just the right time. Tuesday night’s victory over Gateshead made it five victories in six game as they climbed above Sutton United and into second. They had to do things the hard way, coming from 2-0 down to win 4-2 with striker Andy Cook netting all four. The forward is in the form of his career and could be the difference for Rovers.

A late goal from Nicke Kabamba gave Aldershot a big win over Maidenhead United last weekend- only their second victory in six games. The Shots have some difficult fixtures left and will be looking to secure their play-off place as soon as possible before discovering some of their early season form.

Woking v Bromley

Two clubs that have very different aims for the remainder of the season as one is desperate to stay in the National League with the other looking for a way out!

The Cards have lost eight of their last 11 League fixtures and have picked up just two wins since the end of November. They have three games left to try and rescue a season that has slowly faded - enough to see boss Anthony Limbrick depart. Club legend Geoff Chapple is back in the hotseat and he will have to call on all of his experience to ensure Woking remain in Non-League’s top-flight.

There is plenty to look forward to for Bromley. A trip to Wembley in the FA Trophy final beckons but there is still a lot to play for before then. They have outside play-off hopes still and all the Ravens can do is pick up some wins and put pressure on the clubs above them. They will be keen to go into the Wembley showpiece against Brackley in the best possible form.
