Something For The Weekend: National League South

By Sam Elliott

Slightly less matches than normal, but there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied in the Vanarama National League South.

The FA Trophy keeps Wealdstone busy but with ten other matches there’s sure to be lots to talk about once again.

Some of the sides in good form fall under our focus ahead of the weekend’s fixtures - two of which meet in Oxfordshire.

While leaders Dartford and long time chasers Hampton both have home matches they will quietly fancy winning, we take a look at some of the teams looking to throw a spanner in the works.

One of our feature games on Saturday is at Vauxhall Road as Hemel take on Havant - you can see why it’s been selected below.

It promises to be another big weekend so here’s the three stand out games from the games ahead.

Hemel Hempstead v Havant & W

Points on the board or games in hand? It’s always an interesting conversation when it comes to any title race.

Both Dartford and second place Havant have three. The leaders a three point advantage, but the Hawks three matches in the bank. This may not be one of them but those games will come. First a big test at Hemel, who are still hopeful of being involved in the race for first place.

Havant have the best away record by far in the National League, 32 points from 14 games on the road but against Dean Brennan’s Tudors that will come under serious scrutiny.

Oxford City v Chelmsford City

Rewind a few weeks and things weren’t exactly looking great for these two clubs.

Chelmsford’s title challenge seemed well and truly over and Oxford had grave concerns about a return to the Southern League. How things have changed.

Back to back wins against Hemel and Chelmsford have the Nomads up to 16th while the Clarets have taken an excellent ten points in February already. Whose good form turns to great form at Court Place Farm?

Whitehawk v Gloucester City

What a few weeks it’s been for new manager Marc Richards and Gloucester City. It seems not so long ago that a long hard winter had only just got started.

But Monday’s controlled 2-1 win over Wealdstone means they have one foot in the National League South next season, going eight points clear of the bottom three thanks to three wins on the spin.

How Whitehawk could have done with some of those. Although so nearly beating Bath City last time around, another solid winning run is required if they are to stay up - starting against the Tigers.

National League South fixtures:
Braintree Town v Poole
Concord Rangers v Welling United
Dartford v Truro City
East Thurrock v Bath City
Eastbourne v Weston-super-Mare
Hampton v Bognor Regis
Hemel v Havant & W
Oxford City v Chelmsford City
St Albans City v Chippenham
Whitehawk v Gloucester City
