Something For The Weekend: National League South

By Sam Elliott

So the weekend is fast approaching which means one thing - football is nearly back.

Each week we pick out three matches from all the leagues to get you in the mood for the return of the action.

Form teams, and teams who need to get back in form come into focus here as the build up gets underway.

It’s sure to be another great Vanarama National League South weekend..

St Albans City v Bognor Regis Town

This may not be your top of the table humdinger, it may not be two sides in form but this is an important match - it’s all about getting seasons back on track.

Bognor are on the slide and need to arrest their dip in form ASAP. After all the hard work to get into the league, the last thing they want is to head back into the Bostik. Two points from their last six games has seen the Rocks in a hard place - the bottom three.

Usually a trip to St Albans is not wanted, but Ian Allinson’s team are also going through a stick spell. They are still in the top seven - just - but need to restore confidence on Saturday.

Hemel Hempstead v Welling United

Hands up if you hand this down as a big promotion match in the close season? Even fewer would have done so two months into the season when both of these teams crept out of the staring blocks.

But an upturn in form has seen them kick start their campaigns. In particular Welling - relegation fodder not so long ago, now they are aiming for the top.

Dean Brennan is cheerful even at the worst of times, so the Tudors boss is having to peel himself from the ceiling at the moment! Hemel have ten points from their previous four games and have only let in one goal. The boss is demanding more bravery.

Oxford City v Wealdstone

They often say an FA Cup run can be a distraction, but for Oxford City it could well save their season.

Nearly two weeks ago they shocked Colchester United and last week their “excellent” side returned to Essex to throw a stick in the cogs of Chelmsford’s season.

The Stones are on a really good run but there’s one problem - they still haven’t broken into that top seven. Bobby Wilkinson needs a fourth win in a row so that has a chance of happening this weekend.
