Something For The Weekend: National League North

By Steve Whitney

It`s really getting towards the nail-biting period of the season – heading towards the crucial Easter period and the final month of the Vanarama National League North season.

Every game has significance at this time of the campaign, whether it`s for the title, a place in the play-offs or avoiding dropping into the feeder divisions.

It’s another vital weekend ahead with Brackley Town also attempting to make it through to a first-ever Wembley visit as they travel to Wealdstone for the Buildbase FA Trophy Semi-Final second leg holding a slender 1-0 lead.

Here`s three of the stand-out league fixtures to keep an eye on….

Kidderminster Harriers v Salford City

The title race looks like going right to the wire, and Brackley could yet have a say in its destiny, although it would be a tall order for Kevin Wilkin`s side to make up an eight-point deficit on current leaders Salford City as they play catch-up once their Trophy commitments are finished.

The Ammies travel to Worcestershire to take on a Kidderminster Harriers side who are currently fifth, four points in front of the team sitting outside the play-off places, Spennymoor Town.

Harriers got back into the top seven after a midweek win over another of the contenders, York City, having lost their previous three.

Salford will be desperately disappointed not to go into the game with a five-point lead at the top after being held to a 1-1 draw at North Ferriby United, who were confirmed as being relegated afterwards, despite the point.

Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley`s lads will be determined to put the record straight at Aggborough.

Harrogate Town v Gainsborough Trinity

If Salford do slip up at Kidderminster though, second-placed Harrogate Town will be looking to go top of the table on goal difference if they can overcome relegation-threatened Gainsborough Trinity at the CNG Stadium.

The decision to turn full-time seems to have paid dividends already for Simon Weaver`s side and they also possess a game in hand on the leaders.

They were held to a 1-1 draw at another team desperate for points at the other end of the table, Tamworth, last weekend, but go into the game on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run in the league.

Trinity head north trailing third-bottom AFC Telford United and fourth-bottom Curzon Ashton by three points but Lee Sinnott`s new side have played two more games than the two above them.

Trinity go into the match having lost their last three, and having won just one in seven, so it makes Saturday`s game a real `six-pointer`.

Stockport County v Leamington

This is another game involving either end of the table.

Stockport crept into the top seven with a 1-0 midweek win over Boston United at Edgeley Park and now, backed by their superb support, will be determined to stay there and make a bid to return to the top of the non-League game via the play-offs.

However, the Brakes head north in decent form, having won their last three games - all 1-0 - to give them a four-point cushion over the bottom three.

Saturday`s fixtures:

AFC Telford United v Darlington
Chorley v Boston United
Curzon Ashton v Tamworth
FC United of Manchester v Bradford Park Avenue
Harrogate Town v Gainsborough Trinity
Kidderminster Harriers v Salford City
North Ferriby United v Blyth Spartans
Southport v Alfreton Town
Stockport County v Leamington
