Pools beat bottom side Braintree 2-1 after coming from behind to claim victory.
It has been another challenging weeks for the club after Richard Money vacated the hot-seat.
Hignett has taken the job on and he celebrated a winning start to the new era.
“I think the important thing was to get the three points,” Hignett told the club’s website.
“We were flat in the first half. I thought in the second half some of the football was really good.
“Some of it wasn’t so good but what they did do was give it 100 per cent in terms of endeavour and putting their bodies on the line when they needed to.
“The only way it will change at this football club is by winning games and we have to win more than we lose, particularly at home, and today the fans had something to shout about.
“It’s only a start, there is still a long way to go in this season and we want to get as high up the table as we can.”
