Sixth Successive Defeat For Lions - Bluebirds Pick Up A Point

By Steve Whitney

Just a couple of games in the Vanarama National League on Tuesday night but both had significance in the battle to stay at the top level of non-League football.

Guiseley AFC’s chances of retaining their status are disaapearing plummeting rapidly as they went down to a 1-0 defeat at Nethermoor Park to mid-table Gateshead, leaving the Lions now ten points adrift of the safety-mark.

Guiseley have yet to taste victory in 2018 and this was a sixth successive defeat.

What turned out to be the only goal of a freezing cold night in Yorkshire came after just 6 minutes when Wes York raced away, beat Adam Crookes and then cut in to fire into the far corner beyond Lions` keeper Luke Coddington.

Another out-of-form side, Barrow AFC, at least managed to pick up a point from a 1-1 draw at the Furness Building Society Stadium against a Sutton United outfit who moved up a place to fourth in the table, three points behind leaders Macclesfield Town.

Ady Pennock`s side went into the match having not won in seven league and cup games but were given a boost when they went ahead after 10 minutes through French midfielder and former Sutton player, Bedsente Gomis.

A long Dan Jones throw was headed on and the ball fell to Gomis to fire past U`s keeper Jamie Butler.

The Bluebirds enjoyed a good opening 45 minutes but were unable to add to Gomis` early strike.

And in the 73rd minute, Sutton grabbed an equaliser when a quick breakaway ended with Tommy Wright being found in space and he slotted past keeper Steve Anold.

The point leaves Barrow two above the relegation places.
