The 24-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Silkmen and joins for an undisclosed fee.
A former Sheffield United youth team captain, James switched to Port Vale in the summer of 2011.
He was loaned out to Chasetown in October 2011 and joined Hereford United on loan in January 2013 before switching to Hereford on a permanent basis in the summer of 2013.
An impressive spell with Chester FC would follow James' time with the Bulls and in the summer of 2015 the midfielder`s performances saw him attract the interest of Halifax and James would move back to his native Yorkshire.
James would once again catch the eye as the Shaymen won the FA Trophy last term, and in total he made fifty-seven appearances in all competitions for Halifax, scoring 11 times from his midfield role.
Unfortunately, James' displays couldn't keep Halifax in the National League but following their relegation Silkmen boss John Askey has acted quickly to keep the midfielder in the fifth tier and bring him to the Moss Rose.
