Manager Kevin Davies revealed the striker was playing whilst unwell but even that didn’t stop him on Saturday.
Three goals in the 3-0 win at managerless Gainsborough Trinity kept Port’s impressive 2018 form going strong.
The former Bolton and Blackburn hitman knows a thing or two about finding the net and he said his display is why they shelled out to bring him to the club from FC United of Manchester.
“He was actually struggling at half-time with an upset tummy,” revealed Davies to the club’s media channel.
“So credit to him for carrying on like he did. I’m real pleased for him to get another hat-trick, and that’s the kind of mentality we want.
“He took his goals so well. That’s the reason why we bought him. He played in a slightly different role for us than usual but he was outstanding still.
“We know what qualities he has got and that is why we worked so hard to bring him to the club.”
Davies didn’t know what Gainsborough his side will be playing against after their 5-0 defeat at Bradford PA on Monday cost Dave Frecklington his job.
“Losing the manager, you never quite know what to expect,” the Port boss said.
“But once we got the first goal we knew the gaps would open up and they did. It sets us up for a really important period.
“We have a lot of quality in the team. Our bench in particular is now looking really strong and when you can bring good players on against a tiring team it can really help.
“We feel like we are a fitter team now. Other than at Kidderminster we have been very good since the turn of the year. Hopefully we can charge up the table now.”
