Shots Want To Keep Sharp Tonight In The National League Cup

By Sam Elliott

The National League Cup returns this evening and if the first few nights are anything to go by, there could be lots of excitement.

The first ten games produced no fewer than 45 goals - that’s an average of nearly five per game!

So Aldershot Town will be keen to keep the tally high when they welcome Derby County U21 this evening.

It is the club’s maiden voyage in the new tournament, which pits many National League clubs against talented young sides from the EFL and Premier League.

The Shots are progressing well in the cups after beating Bath City on Saturday in the fourth qualifying round despite being a man down for more than half an hour.

Manager Tommy Widdrington is keen to keep building momentum under the lights this evening - and wants the fans to show their support.

“I really hope people come out and watch us against Derby County, it will be a different kind of game from the FA Cup,” he said.

“The players need these games, I need these games and the club needs these games.

“We need to keep going and to keep believing in what we’re doing. I’m looking forward to the match and seeing what we can produce.”
