Shots Celebrate Remembrance Day This Saturday

Aldershot Town has invited all members of the local community to join it in celebrating Remembrance Day and the town’s links with the Armed Forces on Saturday as The Shots face AFC Fylde at the EBB Stadium.

The Club has donated 300 free tickets to local soldiers for the match, which kicks-off at 3pm. The game is preceded by a ceremony hosted by Club Chaplain, Rev Mike Pusey, and featuring standard bearers from four armed services and a Garrison bugler leading a two-minute silence by playing the Last Post.

93-year-old D-Day veteran, and Vice-Chairman of the Aldershot Branch of the British Legion, Lewis Trinder will deliver the matchball to the centre spot, whilst other members of the Aldershot Branch, in conjunction with local RAF Cadets, will make a collection in aid of the 2017 Poppy Appeal.

Ash Manor School’s Combined Cadet Force will form a Guard of Honour for the two teams before acting as ballboys during the match.

Gluco Rx, ethical medical supplies manufacturer and sponsors of Aldershot Town’s Youth Department, will offer free diabetes tests to all supporters attending the match. The Woking-based company, who are the NHS’ second-largest suppliers of quality diabetic products, will be offering advice and a quick, simple test from their stand inside the turnstiles to help combat a disease which affects over 3 million people aged 16 and over in the UK – around 850,000 of whom, it is estimated, are undiagnosed.

“It is once again a great honour to help our local community recognise and commemorate our links with the British Army, and thank Armed Forces from around the world for the sacrifices they make on our behalf,” said Aldershot Town Chairman Shahid Azeem. “We are delighted to be able to donate 300 free tickets to members of the Garrison and hope that they enjoy their day with us.”

“Aldershot Town are a major partner in the Garrison’s community work, and our relationship continues to grow stronger,” explained Garrison Commander, Lt Colonel Nigel MacGregor. “We are hugely grateful for their annual support of the Poppy Appeal and commitment to the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant, and these free tickets are a fantastic gesture from the Club and its sponsors.”

Aldershot Town particularly wish to remember the centenary of the Third Battle of Ypres – better known as Passchendaele – which was fought from 31 July to 10 November 1917. Fourteen of the 44 British Divisions which fought at Passchendaele were either raised or trained in Aldershot, with 39 residents of Aldershot and Farnborough losing their lives amongst a total number of casualties which reached over 438,000 across both sides.

The Club has encouraged regular supporters to Bring A Friend To Aldershot (BAFTA) to help pay tribute to the town’s Garrison and generate a better atmosphere which will help Gary Waddock’s team to a vital victory as they look to return to the Play-Off places in the Vanarama National League.
