Saturday`s Vanarama National League Review....

By Steve Whitney

The top two keep marching on in the Vanarama National League and Saturday saw leaders Cheltenham Town and second-placed Forest Green Rovers....

....both win again to stretch their lead over third-placed Grimsby Town, who were beaten at FC Halifax Town, to a massive fifteen points.

Cheltenham lead the table by four points after a crucial 1-0 win at Prenton Park against a Tranmere Rovers side who had lost only one in their last nine matches to lift them up to fourth spot.

But an early Danny Wright goal was the decisive strike to help the Robins extend their unbeaten league run to twenty-one matches – a new club record.

Former Robin Lee Vaughan cleared off the line just 90 seconds, but only 3 minutes in, Cheltenham took the lead as Wright got the better of his marker and fired home past Scott Davies from 15 yards.

It was end to end after that with Davies the busier keeper.

Rovers came into the game more as the half went on and experienced strike duo Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Michael Higdon had chances well saved by Dillon Phllips in the Cheltenham goal.

Midway through the second half, Dan Holman tried to lob Davies from 25 yards but the Rovers shot-stopper got back and acrobatically tipped the ball out of play for a corner.

On 88 minutes, Adam Mekki's corner was met by the head of Lois Maynard but his effort was straight at Phillips who made the save and Cheltenham made their way back south with all three points.

An 88th minute goal from Jon Parkin gave Forest Green another dramatic victory against fast-falling Eastleigh.

After an uneventful first half the game really came to life just after the hour-mark when James Constable gave Eastleigh the lead only for Forest Green to hit back 3 minutes later with a stunning Parkin volley.

And for the third time in four games Rovers scored a crucial late goal as Parkin bundled in from a corner to keep them four points behind Cheltenham Town.

To make matters worse for the Spitfires, who have dropped to tenth place in the table, they had Ben Strevens sent-off 5 minutes into stoppage time.

FC Halifax Town produced arguably their best win of the season so far as they brushed aside promotion-contenders Grimsby 4-2 at The Shay.

Three goals in 20 first half minutes from Billy Whitehouse, James Bolton and Nicky Wroe put Town in control before Jake Hibbs added the late gloss to hand Halifax a huge boost to their survival hopes.

It hardly seem to matter that Jon Nolan and Padraig Amond scored for Grimsby.

Gateshead are fifth after edging Aldershot Town by the odd goal in five at the International Stadium.

The Shots took an early 6th minute lead through Rhys Browne's chipped finish, before Ryan Bowman headed in an equaliser on 34 minutes.

Three minutes later the hosts then went ahead through CJ Hamilton's right-footed strike, but Jake Gallagher turned in Dan Walker's cross to level the scores 3 minutes before the break.

McLaughlin put Gateshead back in front 6 minutes after the break, and they held on for their third successive home league win.

Wrexham beat struggling Welling United 2-0 at Park View Road to move within two points of the play-off places.

Lee Fowler's close-range finish after 33 minutes and a penalty from Connor Jennings a minute before the break gave Wrexham a commanding 2-0 half-time advantage.

Kayden Jackson hit the post as Wrexham continued to press after the break but were unable to add to their lead.

Lincoln City stayed in the race for the play-offs after a good 3-1 win against Southport at Sincil Bank.

The Dino Maamria factor seems to have won off a little and this was Port`s sixth game without a win.

They fell behind after 31 minutes when Terry Hawkridge`s corner was fired home by loanee James Caton.

And on the hour-mark the Imps increased their advantage when Jack Muldoon set up Caton to net his second of the game.

But on 67 minutes the visitors got themselves back into the game when Louis Almond got on the end of an Andy Bishop free-kick.

However, a minute from the end of normal time, Robbie McDaid managed to finish a Hawkridge cross to make it 3-1.

Woking`s top five hopes took a blow as they were beaten 2-1 at Bromley.

The Cards though got off to a great start when new signing Sam Smith`s cross was converted by John Goddard from close range.

Lee Minshull went close to equalising after 20 minutes with a left-footed effort from 20 yards, and 4 minutes later the hosts did get back on level terms from the penalty spot.

Cameron Norman brought down Adam Coombes in the box and Moses Emmanuel duly converted the resulting spot-kick.

And on the half-hour mark, Bromley went ahead when Emmanuel turned provider for Adam Cunnington to net from six yards.

The second half saw Bromley keep Woking`s attempts largely to long range, while Bradley Goldberg came close to increasing their lead on a couple of occasions.

Chester FC came back from two-down to earn a point from a 2-2 draw with second-bottom Kidderminster Harriers at Aggborough.

Chester and former Harriers` boss Steve Burr experienced a miserable opening half after conceding two goals in 4 minutes.

Arthur Gnahoua broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after controlling Ben Whitfield's assist on the left edge of the penalty area before smashing a low shot beyond Chester keeper Tony Thompson.

Keith Lowe then doubled Harriers' advantage in the 26th minute when he sent Thompson the wrong way with his spot-kick after Ryan Lloyd had handled a cross from Whitfield.

Chester created very few goalscoring chances to trouble home keeper Dean Snedker who only had to fist away a few crosses and catch a first half stoppage time free-kick from John Rooney.

But Ross Hannah pulled a goal back for Chester from the penalty spot in the 66th minute after he had been fouled by Kelvin Langmead.

And substitute James Alabi equalised in the 75th minute with a superb 25-yard effort that found the top corner.

Bottom-markers Torquay United pulled to within a point of Harriers, albeit still ten from the safety-mark, after a 1-0 `six-pointer` win at Meadow Park against fellow strugglers Boreham Wood, who are now back in the drop zone.

The only goal of a tight game in difficult conditions came in the 58th minute when Nathan Blissett's header.

Torquay`s defence earned a second successive clean sheet, which was key to a desperately needed victory.

There was another `six-pointer` at Moss Lane where Altrincham and Guiseley AFC both needed points to avoid being sucked into the bottom four.

And with just one win in their last eleven league matches, Altrincham remain nineteenth and then Lions moved up to seventeenth after a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Guiseley had the better of the first half but fell behind in the 43rd minute when substitute Scott Leather fed Michael Rankine. He made space well before blasting a shot home from outside the box.

The Lions equalised in the 56th minute when Rob Atkinson netted with a free header following a free-kick.

Rankine then missed a great chance to win the game when he hit the bar from six yards, from Reeves's feed, 6 minutes from time.
