Saturday`s Round-Up: Vanarama National League South

By Steve Whitney

In contrast to the north, the relatively `balmy` southern half of the country saw a full programme of fixtures in the Vanarama National League South take place.

And the outcome is we have a three-way tie at the top of the table, with Dartford, Braintree Town and Hampton & Richmond Borough all on 38 points.

Dartford hold top spot on goal difference but were beaten 1-0 at Bulpit Lane by a Hungerford Town side who brought an end to a seven-game run without a win.

What turned out to be the winning goal came after 22 minutes from Louis Soares.

Braintree are second after edging out Eastbourne Borough by the odd goal in five at Cressing Road.

The Iron had to bounce back from falling behind to a 13th minute goal from Boro`s recent recruit, Shaun Okojie.

Phil Roberts pulled the hosts back on level terms after 36 minutes as the teams went into the break all-square.

It was Roberts who scored his and Braintree`s second just past the hour-mark to make it 2-1.

But Kiran Khinda-John equalised in the 75th minute, only for Billy Crook to restore Braintree`s lead within 2 minutes – a lead they held on to.

Hampton extended their winning run to ten games in total (eight in the league), with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over East Thurrock United.

Charlie Wassmer opened the scoring on 3 minutes with a crisp half volley from the edge of the box, before Adam Coombes made it 2-0 just on the half-hour mark.

Coombes bagged his second of the day on 42 minutes before Brendan Kiernan's sharp finish from an acute angle made it 4-0 at half-time.

Tom Richardson got one back for the Rocks with 15 minutes to go before striker Sam Higgins was dismissed for his second bookable offence a few minutes later.

Kiernan got his second goal with 5 minutes left after Rocks `keeper Lukas Lidakevicius made a complete air-shot when attempting a clearance, leaving the Hampton player with the easiest of tap-ins

A really tight division sees Havant & Waterlooville and Chelmsford City sit just two points behind the top trio and Hemel Hempstead Town and Truro City in sixth and seventh respectively, a point further back.

The Hawks beat Chippenham Town 4-0 at Westleigh Park.

Ryan Woodford put the home side in front after just 6 minutes and 4 minutes later, Wes Fogden doubled Lee Bradbury`s side`s lead.

Fogden added his second and the Hawks` third after 64 minutes, with sub Theo Widdrington making it 4-0 with 8 minutes remaining.

Chelmsford spoiled the day for Gloucester City`s Tom Webb, who was playing his 700th game for the Tigers at Evesham.

But his side failed to break down the Clarets, who took a 16th minute lead through Chris Dickson.

And in the 82nd minute, Kudos Oyenuga made sure the points were going back to Essex, as he slotted home from the penalty spot, after Sam Avery had brought down Shaun Batt in the area.

Hemel condemned bottom-markers Whitehawk to a seventeenth defeat in twenty-one matches by going nap at the Enclosed Ground.

A dreadful afternoon for the Hawks began in the very first minute when Will Hoskins gave the Tudors the lead.

James Kaloczi added a second after 33 minutes and 5 minutes into the second half, Hoskins made it game over with a third.

Matthew Campbell-Mhlope added number four on 69 minutes and former Whitehawk forward Alex Osborn made it a nap hand 3 minutes later.

Truro City played out a 2-2 draw at Welling United in what was an entertaining and hard-fought encounter in a chilly Kent.

It was the Wings who opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Jack Parkinson.

Cody Cooke pulled the White Tigers back on level terms within 5 minutes and it was the visitors who took the lead 4 minutes into the second half, thanks to Tyler Harvey.

But Jack Jebb equalised just past the hour-mark and a keenly-contested encounter ended with both teams going for the winner and giving their all as it ended honours-even.

St Albans City scored a late equaliser to claim a 1-1 draw in what turned into a highly-entertaining match against Oxford City.

The visitors took a 20th minute lead through Rob Sinclair but held on after that.

The Saints laid siege in the second half, creating plenty of chances, and Sam Merson eventually got the equaliser 3 minutes from time.

Bath City were held to a third successive Twerton Park goalless draw, this time against struggling Bognor Regis Town.

This game was a largely forgettable affair, with neither side able to create more than the occasional sight of goal to keep the majority of the 658 fans happy in the freezing cold.

Jeremiah Gyebi scored on his Poole Town debut in their 3-1 win over Weston-super-Mare at Tatnam.

The 18-year-old Yeovil Town loanee came off the bench and netted 3 minutes from time to seal a vital three points for the Dolphins.

Earlier, Steve Devlin had given Poole a 19th minute lead that Warren Bentley doubled right on the stroke of half-time.

Then came Gyebi`s goal in his first taste of adult football, before Gethyn Hill netted a stoppage time consolation for the Seagulls.

Concord Rangers moved up to sixteenth in the table after a 3-1 home win over Wealdstone.

The only goal of the opening 45 minutes came from the Beachboys` Khale Da Costa after 21 minutes.

Then Ben Greenhalgh doubled the home side`s advantage from the penalty spot 5 minutes into the second half.

Eddie Oshodi reduced the deficit 8 minutes later, but Harry Lee ensured Rangers made it back-to-back league wins with a third in stoppage time.
