Saturday’s Round-Up: Vanarama National League South

By Steve Whitney

Dartford moved three points clear at the top of the Vanarama National League South table on Saturday following a 1-0 win at Poole Town, while second-placed Braintree Town were beaten at Wealdstone.

Richard Sho-Silva headed the Darts into an early 8th minute lead at Tatnam.

But they weren`t able to add to that as Poole tried hard to get back on level terms.

However, 7 minutes from time, Poole lost Marvin Brooks to a straight red card and ended the game with nine-men when Richard Gillespie also saw red 3 minutes into stoppage time.

At Grosvenor Vale, new signing from Maldon & Tiptree, Tao Olomowewe, gave the Stones an early 8th minute lead that Dan Fitchett doubled after 32 minutes.

Danny Green added a third immediately after half-time, with all Braintree could muster in response being a 65th minute Joe Ellul effort.

Hampton & Richmond Borough moved into third after they won 2-1 against in-form Weston-super-Mare, who lost for the first time in six.

Weston`s Marc McGregor received the manager of the month award yesterday and it started well enough at Woodspring Park on Saturday when top scorer Dayle Grubb gave them a 5th minute opener with a 20-yard effort.

Charlie Wassmer's 11th minute header levelled the score.

But it wasn`t until the 77th minute when Max Kretzschmar was bundled over in the box that the Beavers managed to take the lead - the midfielder stepping up to rifle the spot-kick home.

And, despite frantic pressure from the hosts, the Beavers held on for three crucial points.

Hampton leap-frogged Truro City who were beaten 2-1 at Treyew Road by a St Albans City side who hadn`t won in the league since October 7th.

The deadlock was broken in the 71st minute when Sam Merson put the Saints in front.

Ten minutes later, Charlie Walker doubled the visitors` lead.

Sub Chris Todd was fouled inside the area to win a penalty and Tyler Harvey stepped up to reduce the arrears in the final minute.

That win lifted St Albans back into the top seven, while Chelmsford City are a place in front in sixth after being held to a 1-1 draw at Melbourne Stadium by lowly Hungerford Town.

It started well enough for the Clarets as Michael Spillane put them in front inside the opening 6 minutes.

And they looked like recording all three points, until Anton Rodgers popped up with an 87th minute leveller for the Crusaders.

Hemel Hempstead Town are level on points with St Albans in eighth after holding on for a goalless draw at Twerton Park with ten-men for the final half-hour.

The crucial moment came just past the hour-mark when Matthew Spring blocked Nick McCootie’s shot on the goalline with his arm.

He received a straight red card but City`s Nat Jarvis’ penalty was saved by Laurie Walker.

Welling United lost ground after a disappointing display at Park View Road against East Thurrock United.

It was a fourth home defeat of the season for Jamie Coyle's men, who had Connor Dymond sent-off in the 69th minute.

The Wings were already trailing to a 33rd minute goal from ex-Welling man Reece Harris.

And after the dismissal, two goals from Sam Higgins in the 71st and 82nd minutes confirmed victory for the Rocks.

Bottom-markers Whitehawk are really becoming detached and a sixteenth defeat from twenty matches leaves them thirteen points adrift of fourth-bottom Oxford City.

The latest Hawks defeat came at Hardenhuish Park where Chippenham Town broke the deadlock after 68 minutes through Matt Smith.

David Pratt doubled the Bluebirds` lead in the 84th minute, rendering Seny Deing`s stoppage time reply as just a consolation for the visitors.

Second-bottom Bognor Regis Town are also in need of a change of fortunes after they suffered a 2-1 Nyewood Lane defeat to fellow strugglers Concord Rangers, who are now seventeenth and four points ahead of the Rocks.

This was actually the Beachboys` ninth league game without defeat – six of those being draws.

And they got off to a great start when Lewis Taaffe game them an early 2nd minute lead.

Khale Da Costa made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark.

Keaton Wood replied with 14 minutes to go, but Bognor couldn`t find a leveller.

Eastbourne Borough won 2-1 at Evesham against managerless Gloucester City.

Ian Simpemba gave the Boro a 20th minute lead that Jamie Taylor quickly doubled 4 minutes later.

Joe Parker reduced the deficit 7 minutes into the second half, but the Tigers weren`t able to find an equaliser.
