Saturday’s Round Up: Vanarama National League North

By Steve Whitney

Salford City are nine points clear at the top of the Vanarama National League North table after recording a hard-fought 1-0 win at Croft Park against fellow promotion-chasers Blyth Spartans on Saturday.

However, the Ammies might just be grateful to get away with this one as the home side bossed possession for large parts of the game, and the crowd of 1,040 saw what proved to be the only goal of the game come in the 36th minute.

Home keeper Peter Jameson brought down Jack Renshaw in the box, which allowed November`s player of the month to score the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Spartans came close to scoring on a number of occasions after that, but were unable to find an equaliser.

Brackley Town maintained their good form with a good 3-2 win at St James`s Park against another of the play-off chasers, Stockport County.

Shane Byrne put the Saints ahead after 16 minutes, only for Chris Smalley to equalise within 6 minutes.

County led at the break after Matty Warburton made it 2-1 in the 42nd minute.

But Kevin Wilkin`s side saw top scorer Aaron Williams pounce twice in the 57th and 70th minutes to overturn Stockport`s advantage and earn three crucial points for the Northamptonshire side.

Brackley went above Harrogate Town, who are now a point back in third after losing by the same scoreline at Broadhurst Park against struggling FC United of Manchester

FC United`s seventh straight home win in front of 2,394 was achieved after coming back from being a 25th minute Jack Vann goal down.

Vann`s header took Town into half-time in front, but Craig Lindfield struck 4 minutes after the restart to level.

Player-manager Tom Greaves headed FC United in front in the 83rd minute, and Greaves scored another as the contest entered stoppage time to seal the win.

There was still time for Harrogate striker Simon Ainge to end his return with a goal though as striker claimed his 32nd league goal of 2017 from the spot after Josh Falkingham was brought down in the box.

Bradford Park Avenue are sixth after recording a 3-1 win at the Impact Arena against Alfreton Town.

Avenue supporters were hoping that the dreaded manager of the month award `bogey` wouldn`t affect them after Mark Bower was rewarded yesterday.

And it didn`t, despite the Reds leading at the break, courtesy of a 24th minute Mark Ross own goal.

Adam Boyes quickly levelled matters 3 minutes after the restart and Shane Killock put confident Avenue ahead on the hour-mark.

Oli Johnson confirmed victory with a third just 8 minutes later.

Kidderminster Harriers moved into the play-off places with a comfortable 3-0 win over struggling Gainsborough Trinity.

Joe Ironside’s 12th goal of the season broke the deadlock 2 minutes into the second half.

Fraser Horsfall added a second for the home side just past the hour-mark and Declan Weeks wrapped up back-to-back successes on home soil for Harriers 8 minutes from the end.

Chorley are level on points with Kidderminster in eighth after a 2-0 Victory Park win over Leamington, who failed to follow up their 4-0 hammering of Spennymoor Town in their last outing.

Goals from Andy Teague after 39 minutes and then Marcus Carver right on the half-time whistle eventually proved enough for the Magpies.

Tamworth could have joined Chorley and Kidderminster on thirty points had they beaten struggling Southport at The Lamb.

But Andy Morrell`s side have been inconsistent this season and had to fight back from being 3-1 down with 15 minutes to go before salvaging a point from a 3-3 thriller.

Port`s recent signing, Jason Gilchrist, gave them an early 5th minute lead and the former FC United of Manchester striker showed why Kevin Davies was so keen to sign him when he doubled the visitors` lead immediately after the break.

An unfortunate own goal from Curtis Jones pulled the Lambs back into the contest in the 71st minute, only for Gilchrist to complete his hat-trick 4 minutes later.

But goals from Bradley Reid in the 82nd minute and then Connor Taylor in stoppage time pulled Tamworth back on level terms.

Second-bottom Boston United made a return to winning ways as they picked up their first victory under Craig Elliott's management.

The Pilgrims trailed York City, courtesy of Adriano Moke's 19th minute thunderbolt at the Jakemans Stadium, but turned the tables after the break.

Jordan Keane equalised 9 minutes into the half and Ashley Hemmings scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 74th minute.

Third-bottom Nuneaton Town secured their first away victory of the season with a 2-0 success against rock-bottom North Ferriby United.

Second half goals from Tom Elliott after 62 minutes and Ashley Chambers 3 minutes later saw Boro defeat their Humberside opponents for the second time in a week after their Buildbase FA Trophy victory.

Spennymoor Town’s fixture against AFC Telford United at The Brewery Field was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.

The region has been hit with snow and rain over the course of the week which resulted in a waterlogged surface.
