Saturday's Round Up: Vanarama National League North

By Steve Whitney

Harrogate Town lead the table by two points after they won 2-1 at Alfreton Town. However, all the headlines this weekend will once again be on second-placed Salford City.

The Ammies are used to being in the limelight since being co-owned by the `Class of `92`, but today the headlines won`t be about a good 2-1 win at Bradford Park Avenue`s Horsfall Stadium, but for goalkeeper Max Crocombe being sent-off for urinating.

The former New Zealand international was dismissed with 3 minutes remaining after it is understood that a spectator reported the incident to a police officer when play was at the other end.

After the match finished, Crocombe posted on his Twitter page (@meeiix): “I’d like to sincerely apologise for the incident today. I was in a very uncomfortable position and made an error in judgement which spoiled a great win.

“My intention was never to offend anyone and I’d like to apologise to both clubs and both sets of supporters and it won’t happen again.”

In terms of the game itself, Avenue took a 17th minute lead when Carl Piergianni conceded a penalty which Ollie Johnson converted.

It wasn`t until 20 minutes from time that Mike Phenix scored to pull Salford back on level terms.

But they made it two in 2 minutes as sub Jonathan Mafuta beat the keeper from a narrow angle to make it 2-1.

But the result will long be forgotten!

Harrogate were also reduced to ten-men as they won 2-1 at the Impact Arena against Alfreton – but in more routine circumstances!

The leaders made it seven away wins on the bounce as Joe Leesley converted a penalty just 3 minutes into the game.

Jack Emmett, who had won the spot-kick, made it 2-0 just 4 minutes later.

The Reds responded through Tom Allan’s header after 35 minutes, but couldn’t complete their comeback in the second half, even after Leesley was shown a second yellow card 3 minutes after half-time.

Newcomers Blyth Spartans are now third after they beat north-east rivals Darlington FC 3-1 at Croft Park.

But David Syers put the visitors ahead on the half-hour mark.

Adam Wrightson pulled the host back on level terms just 3 minutes after the restart.
Sean Reid then headed home 9 minutes later to turn the game in Blyth’s favour, before Robbie Dale smashed home a third with 8 minutes left to condemn Tommy Wright to defeat in his first game in charge.

Brackley Town are fourth after condemning hosts Boston United to second-bottom spot in winning 3-2 at the Jakemans Stadium.

Two goals in 5 minutes, starting with Andy Brown`s 10th minute effort and then one from Aaron Williams, saw the visitors in control.

Three minutes into the second half, Williams made it 3-0.

The Pilgrims made a game of it when Ashley Hemmings from the spot after 54 minutes and then Jay Rollins 17 minutes from time reduced the deficit to just one, but Kevin Wilkin`s side held on for the points.

Spennymoor Town are fifth after ending a mini-run of two matches without a win, thanks to a 1-0 Brewery Field success against the team immediately below them, Chorley.

Andrew Johnson`s 63rd minute effort eventually proved enough for the Moors.

Tamworth complete the top seven after they ended a run of four successive defeats after beating York City by the odd goal in five in front of 2,605 at Bootham Crescent.

Reece Styche struck for the visitors either side of the break, although Jon Parkin's 10th goal of the season to date reduced the deficit on 56 minutes before recent signing David Ferguson was sent-off on 63 minutes.

However, debutant Daniel Rowe then equalised 5 minutes later after coming off the bench, only for the Lambs to snatch victory in stoppage time when Darryl Knights scored on the breakaway.

A crowd of 3,015 at Edgeley Park saw Kidderminster Harriers come from a goal down to beat hosts Stockport County.

It looked as though the teams would go into the break all-square in difficult conditions until Matty Warburton slotted County in front in injury-time.

But the visitors turned the game on its head, thanks to a Joe Ironside brace in the 58th and then in the dying seconds of stoppage time at the end of the game.

A stoppage time penalty saw AFC Telford United held to a 1-1 draw against Southport at the New Bucks Head

The Bucks took the lead 5 minutes before half-time, Marcus Dinanga netting his 11th goal of the season to date.

But the Bucks were pegged back by Kevin Davies` side after Ryan Wilson was adjudged to have handled and Nathan Lowe coolly converted from the spot with virtually the last kick of the game.

There was defeat for Dino Maamria in his first game as permanent manager of Nuneaton Town.

Announced as the replacement for Tommy Wright just before kick-off, Maamria saw his side go down 2-1 at fellow strugglers FC United of Manchester, who also lost their manager Karl Marginson last week.

With forward Tom Greaves in temporary charge, the Rebels took a 33rd minute lead through Jason Gilchrist after good work by the temporary boss.

And they doubled their advantage just past the hour-mark when Jordan Fagbola scrambled the ball in.

Callum Ball reduced the deficit on 81 minutes after FC United keeper Lloyd Allinson failed to hold a Jordan Nicholson effort, but Maamria`s men couldn`t find a leveller.

Botom-markers North Ferriby United find themselves six points adrift at the foot of the table after going down to a 2-1 defeat at Leamington.

The opening goal came after 8 minutes when a poorly defended throw-in reached Jack Edwards some 16 yards from goal and his deflected effort gave Ross Durrant no chance.

Leamington doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when Kurtis Revan was adjudged to have been fouled by Jake Skelton and Rob Thompson-Brown sent Durrant the wrong way from the spot.

Thompson-Brown scored his second penalty in the 56th minute after Jordan Cooke was the next to bring down Revan.
