Gateshead had former Newcastle United favourite Steve Watson in charge for the first time and can count themselves a little unfortunate not to have won the game, with Luke Hannant especially unlucky to see two efforts hit the bar.
The Whites had to scrap for the point which took them back to the summit.
Dover are back on top due to Macclesfield Town`s 2-1 defeat at the Moss Rose by an Eastleigh side who were beaten by bottom-markers Solihull Moors in midweek.
The Silkmen generally had the better of the opening period, yet went in one-down when Mark Yeates gave the Spifires the lead right on the whistle after an error by home keeper Shwan Jalal.
And then 5 minutes after the break, Yeates doubled his and Eastleigh`s lead with a low strike past Jalal.
Jalal`s opposite number, Ross Flitney, produced several fine saves to deny the Silkmen, but he was finally beaten in stoppage time by Danny Whitehead, although it came too late to have an effect on the outcome.
Third-placed Wrexham were denied victory against Leyton Orient at the Racecourse Ground by a late Mark Ellis goal having led twice through a Chris Holroyd brace.
The Reds were in front inside the first minute, Holroyd heading home a deflected cross, but were pegged back by Macauley Bonne's 22nd minute effort.
Wrexham led again with 20 minutes remaining when Holroyd was again on hand to convert, but an 85th minute header from Ellis denied them victory.
Sutton United are fourth but were held at Gander Green Lane by mid-table Ebbsfleet United.
Darryl McMahon`s team battled hard and matched the U's physically and defended bravely.
Sutton applied plenty of pressure in the second half, but Fleet stood firm and deserved a point from a goalless encounter.
Maidstone United are now fifth after a last-gasp win at the Gallagher Stadium against struggling Chester FC.
Queens Park Rangers loanee Alex Finney condemned Chester to defeat, despite a decent performance from Marcus Bignot`s side.
The home side left all of the drama until the 5th minute of time added on at the end of the game, as Finney pounced on a poor clearance from a corner and smashed the ball into the roof of the net past Alex Lynch.
Dagenham & Redbridge slipped to sixth after being held to a 1-1 draw by Maidenhead United at York Road.
Morgan Ferrier went close to giving the Daggers an early lead, only to be denied by a decent Carl Pentney save, and then former Dover Athletic striker Moses Emmanuel was denied at the other end.
However, it was Alan Devonshire`s side who broke the deadlock 6 minutes before half-time when Sam Barratt`s long throw was glanced past Daggers` keeper Mark Cousins by Remy Clerima.
Ten minutes into the second half, the visitors got themselves back on level terms when good work from Charlee Adams was finished off by Michael Cheek.
The Daggers came closest to winning it late on through the lively Ferrier, but the draw was probably about right on the day.
Bromley remain level on points and a place behind Dagenham after also sharing the spoils on Saturday in a 2-2 draw at Meadow Park against Boreham Wood.
The home side took a 24th minute lead when a free-kick was headed away by Daniel Johnson, only for David Stephens to fire the loose ball past David Gregory.
The visitors were level within 8 minutes and again it was a free-kick that saw Frankie Raymond set up Josh Rees to head past Grant Smith.
Four minutes later, Bromley were in front when good work from Brett Williams ended with Luke Wanadio showing some neat footwork before firing past Smith.
However, the lead lasted barely 3 minutes as Wood fought back, Jamie Turley profiting from some indifferent defending to score.
Either side could have won it in the second half, and both sides will probably see it as a decent point.
Woking dropped to eighth after losing 3-2 against Guiseley AFC at the Laithwaite Community Stadium – a result that lifted the Lions out of the drop zone.
Declan Appau put the home side ahead after 14 minutes with a superb first-time effort which found the top corner past Jonny Maxted.
However, the visitors equalised and then took the lead thanks to a Rowan Liburd brace in the 34th and 49th minutes.
On-loan Charlton Athletic youngster Regan Charles-Cook equalised to make it 2-2 with 65 minutes gone on the clock, but Guiseley substitute Mike Fondop restored their lead 16 minutes from time to win it by the odd goal in five.
A hat-trick from Adi Yussuf’s helped send Aldershot Town to defeat against Barrow AFC at the Furness Building Society Stadium in Ady Pennock`s first game in charge of the Bluebirds.
Yussuf`s opener came after less than 5 minutes and then doubled his and the Cumbrian`s tally after 39 minutes.
And even though Adam McDonnell pulled one back at the start of the second half, Barrow were good value for their victory after Yussuf completed his hat-trick in the 65th minute.
Torquay United remain second-bottom after losing 2-0 at Plainmoor to Hartlepool United, who stretched their unbeaten run to seven games and are now twelfth.
Craig Harrison’s side were not at their best in a disappointing first half when the hosts offered little either.
But 9 minutes into the second half, Blair Adams whipped in a cross in to the near post and Rhys Oates headed home past Vincent Dorel.
Then on 67 minutes, Jonathan Franks let fly from 25 yards with a shot which took a slight deflection before finding its way past Dorel.
Tranmere Rovers saw off FC Halifax Town 4-2 at Prenton Park.
The home side took an early 5th minute when James Norwood tucked home a Jay Harris cross.
Micky Mellon`s side doubled their advantage 9 minutes later with Norwood notching his second with a far post header.
It was 2-0 at the break, but just 6 minutes into the second half, Matty Brown reduced the deficit.
However, new signing Larnell Cole – on for the injured Norwood – restored Tranmere`s two-goal advantage on his debut less than a minute later.
Five minutes after that, Tranmere made it 4-1 through Dylan Mottley-Henry and another making his debut, the Shaymen`s on-loan Daniel Batty, pulled a second back for the visitors on 65 minutes.
Bottom-markers Solihull Moors should have been buoyed by their fine midweek win at Eastleigh, but followed that up with a hugely disappointing 4-0 thumping at their own Automated Technology Group Stadium against new boys AFC Fylde.
The Coasters virtually killed Moors off with two goals in a minute just before the break.
The first on 44 minutes came when a poor clearance fell to Johnny Smith who beat loanee keeper Nick Townsend at his near post.
Almost straight from the restart, a Danny Rowe free-kick deflected off Shepherd Murombedzi and wrong-footed Townsend.
Then on 76 minutes it was game over when James Bowen lost the ball to Sam Finley, who went through to make it 3-0.
And then 2 minutes from time, sub Serhat Tasdemir crossed for Jack Muldoon to make it 4-0.
