Saturday`s Round Up: Vanarama National League

By Steve Whitney

Macclesfield Town seem determined to make a bid to obtain their place back in the Football League this term and head the Vanarama National League table following a hard-earned 1-0 win at the Matchroom Stadium against Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The Silkmen`s fifth successive league win came courtesy of a header from Scott Wilson right on the stroke of half-time.

And that was a little harsh on the O`s, as the goal came after the hosts had dominated the majority of the first period.

But it proved to be the winner as Orient failed to find a way back into the game against a resolute Macc defence and are down in nineteenth place in the table.

Dover Athletic remain in second spot but were denied three points at Crabble by a last-gasp Maidenhead United equaliser to finish 1-1.

After a first half played in really difficult conditions, Mitchell Pinnock had probably the only real clear-cut chance to put the home side in front.

Both teams have had half chances but it remained goalless at half-time.

But it was the visiting Magpies who almost broke the deadlock on the hour-mark when Jake Goodman smacked an effort off the bar.

Sixteen minutes later though it was Dover who did take the lead when a long Loui Fazakerley clearance found sub Kadell Daniel who crossed for Ryan Bird to heads in past Carl Pentney.

Almost immediately after the kick-off, the Whites almost made it 2-0 when roles were reversed and Bird set-up Daniel, whose 25-yard effort crashed against the woodwork.

Bird`s goal looked like being enough, until the 3rd minute of stoppage time when Rene Steer crossed for Jake Hyde to stab in the loose ball from close range.

Wrexham are third after inflicting a second successive 1-0 defeat on Dagenham & Redbridge, who were also beaten by the same scoreline by Orient in their midweek FA Cup replay.

In really windy conditions at Victoria Road, Wrexham were given a massive boost when, after 33 minutes, Mark Carrington was brought down by a poor challenge by Daggers` midfielder Kevin Lokko who was shown a straight red card.

But the ten-men battled hard and it looked as though they were going to earn a point.

In fact, home fans thought they`d won it near the end when sub Mason Bloomfield fired past Chris Dunn, only for the assistant`s flag to chalk that off.

Then Wrexham sub Scott Boden grabbed the winner it in the 93rd minute, from close range after a melee, although it could also have been a Craig Robson own goal.

Woking dropped to fourth as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Hayes Lane to a Bromley side who are now in sixth spot.

All the action centred around the half-time break.

In the 42nd minute, Bromley broke the deadlock when Adam Mekki`s free-kick was headed past Nathan Baxter by Jack Holland.

Within seconds of the goal, Woking almost equalised, but Joe Ward`s effort was well saved by David Gregory.

That proved crucial as, right on the half-time whistle, Josh Rees headed in Bromley`s second.

And then 2 minutes into the second half, Woking`s task became extremely tough when they had Kane Ferdinand sent-off for a reckless challenge on Jordan Higgs.

Sutton United are fifth after grabbing a late goal to take a share of the points from a tight game at Victoria Park against Hartlepool United.

Rhys Oates put Pools ahead in the 39th minute when Devante Rodney`s shot was blocked and fell kindly for Oates to score.

But Tommy Wright grabbed the U`s equaliser in the 3rd minute of stoppage time at the end of the game.

An exciting finale in front of 2,714 fans at the EBB Stadium saw Aldershot Town come from behind to beat Tranmere Rovers 2-1 and move into seventh spot.

Rovers took a 17th minute lead when a Jeff Hughes corner was headed in at the far-post by Steve McNulty, although Hughes was credited with the goal at the time.

The Shots huffed a puffed in a strong gale but were unable to find a way past a Rovers side determined to get back amongst the leading pack after a bad start to the season.

But, in the 80th minute, the home side equalised when McNulty missed a low header, and the ball fell to Fabien Robert whose shot beat Scott Davies.

The Shots then went all out for the winner, but it didn`t look like coming until the 5th minute of stoppage time when Jim Kellerman`s in-swinging cross went in with Scott Rendell putting pressure on Davies.

Chester FC slumped to third-bottom after a 2-1 home defeat to Boreham Wood.

In awful conditions, the home side were made to pay for a poor first half that saw them concede two goals to Shaun Jeffers after 31 minutes and Angelo Balanta 7 minutes later.

Chester improved after the break and Nyal Bell’s strike with 14 minutes left made Wood work hard for their win, but it`s looking like being hard work for new Blues boss Marcus Bignot to improve the side and its confidence.

Ebbsfleet United are tenth after edging out Barrow AFC, who parted company with manager Micky Moore earlier in the week, with a narrow 3-2 win at Stonebridge Road.

broke the deadlock on 24 minutes with a piece of classic centre-forward link-up play. Danny Kedwell headed a long ball on for Aaron McLean whose left-footed volley crashed into the roof of the net.

They trailed 1-0 at half-time but, playing on the front foot, deservedly levelled through substitute Bedsente Gomis on 70 minutes.

Parity lasted just 5 minutes though when Barrow `keeper Joel Dixon dropped Jack Powell's powerful shot at the feet of Andy Drury, who netted Fleet`s second.

And it was 3-1 when Barrow allowed a long ball to bounce and Danny Kedwell's delightful centre from the right-hand side gifted Powell a tap-in.

Gomis scored again in stoppage time at the end of the game, but it was not enough for salvage anything.

FC Halifax Town were looking to push into the top seven when they entertained second-bottom Torquay United at The Shay.

After an uninspiring opening period played in very difficult conditions, the Shaymen looked as though they`d unearthed a new hero when, after 68 minutes, new loan signing from league rivals Tranmere Rovers, George Waring, reacted to a loose ball in the box to fire past Gulls` keeper Vincent Dorel.

However, in the 77th minute the scores were even again, when a corner was met by Rhys Murphy whose flicked header hit the post but was turned in by Torquay`s own new signing from Exeter City, Jamie Reid.

Eastleigh bounced back from their FA Cup defeat to earn all three points at the Silverlake Stadium against Gateshead.

Ben Williamson gave the Spitfires an early 5th minute lead.

That was how the teams turned round at the break, but just past the hour-mark, James Constable put the home side two ahead.

But the visitors fought back with goals from Jordan Preston after 74 minutes and Theo Vassell in the 86th minute to seemingly hand the Heed a point.

However, sub Ben Strevens scored a last-minute goal to earn Richard Hill`s side a vital victory.

Solihull Moors are bottom of the table after becoming fellow strugglers Guiseley AFC`s second victims of the season to date.

The Lions triumphed 4-2 at Nethermoor to move to fourth-bottom spot.

The home side took a 24th minute lead when Lee Molyneux`s free-kick into the top corner left Moors ` keeper Nathan Vaughan helpless.

But right on the stroke of half-time, Solihull equalised when Guiseley failed to clear their lines and Oladapo Afolayan drove the ball low and hard past Jonny Maxted.

The conditions worsened in the second half and it was becoming difficult to put any decent moves together.

But then three goals came along in quick succession, starting with a 65th minute goal by loanee debutant Rowan Liburd, who had only come off the bench 5 minutes earlier.

A minute later though Solihull were back on level terms when Afolayan knocks in a low pass for his second of the afternoon.

And almost straight from the restart came another goal, this time for the hosts when Jake Lawlor volleyed home following a free-kick.

Then in the 88th minute, the home side killed the game off when John Rooney converted a well-struck free-kick.

A waterlogged Mill Farm led to the abandonment of AFC Fylde's game with Maidstone United early in the second half.

The referee led both sets of players off shortly after the break in wet and windy conditions, and both teams agreed the game - which Fylde were leading 2-1 - could not be resumed.
