Saturday's Round-Up: The National League South

By Steve Whitney

Havant & Waterlooville maintained their two-point lead at the top of the Vanarama National League South after a late 2-1 win at Twerton Park against Bath City.

Havant snatched the lead a minute after half-time when Wes Fogden found the net.

But they failed to put Bath away and a terrific strike from Tom Smith 8 minutes from time looked like it had earned the hosts a point.

However, a mistake from Reading loanee keeper Luke Southwood allowed Theo Lewis to net the Hawks` winner just 2 minutes later.

Dartford are second, two points above a Hampton & Richmond Borough side who were held to a 2-2 draw at the Beveree by a Braintree Town side who haven`t given up on the play-off race yet, now being four points behind the top seven places, and battled to a draw with nine-men.

The Darts beat Oxford City 2-0 away, taking an early 5th minute lead through Elliot Bradbrook.

Tony Burman`s side made sure of the points with a second from Tom Murphy 13 minutes from time.

Braintree had Billy Crook dismissed on the half-hour mark to a sraight red card after a late challenge on Josh Casey.

But it was the ten-men who broke the deadlock when Marcel Barrington fired the Iron into the lead in the 78th minute.

However, Ben Wynter levelled for the hosts in the 81st minute before Luke Allen also got his marching orders after he received a second yellow card.

St Albans City are fourth after a hard-earned 2-1 Clarence Park victory over third-bottom Poole Town.

Marvin Brooks had given the Dolphins a 38th minute lead when the Saints netted a bizarre equaliser in the 69th minute when a long ball saw Rhys Murrell-Williamson break away and then saw Poole `keeper Nick Hutchings come out to tackle him 45 yards from goal.

Murrell-Williamson got to the ball first and poked it through the keeper’s legs and into the net.

And then deep into stoppage time at the end of the game, St Albans grabbed the winner when Percy Kiangebeni bundled the ball in following a corner.

Truro City are fifth after a good 3-1 win at Eastbourne Borough.

And the White Tigers had to come back from being a 13th minute Manny Odubade goal down to win.

Tom Owen-Evans equalised just past the half-hour mark and 5 minutes later, the Cornish side were ahead through Jamie Richards.

Cody Cooke made sure the points went west with a third in the 51st minute.

Welling United and Hemel Hempstead Town occupy the two final play-off berths and both won on Saturday.

The Wings increased Hungerford Town`s relegation worries with a 4-1 Bulpit Lane hammering.

And that after falling behind to a 6th minute goal from player boss Ian Herring.

Jamie Philpot equalised on 35 minutes and 3 minutes into the second half, Adam Coombes put the visitors in front.

Jamie Coyle added a third just past the hour-mark and Philpot`s second 16 minutes from time was added icing on the cake for the in-form Wings.

Hemel ended Gloucester City’s winning run with three second half goals at Vauxhall Road.

This was another game where the winners had to come back from a goal down as Ed Williams put the Tigers in front 6 minutes before the break.

David Moyo equalised in the 57th minute and a stunning free-kick from Jordan Parkes put the Tudors in front 20 minutes later.

Karl Oliyide made sure with a third in the last minute.

Bognor Regis Town`s slide towards relegation continued with a 1-0 defeat at the Woodspring Stadium against Weston-super-Mare.

The hosts scored the only goal through Kenan Dunnwald.

Defeat leaves the Rocks thirteen points from safety with only eight games to play - and they are now only a point above bottom side Whitehawk.

That`s because the Hawks returned to winning ways against Concord Rangers at The TerraPura Ground.

David Ijaha broke the deadlock to give the Hawks the lead 3 minutes after the break and Kodi Lyons-Foster made sure with a second on 68 minutes.

The loss leaves the Beachboys in trouble too, level on points with Hungerford in eighteenth spot.

Chippenham Town are just about secure in their first season in the National League South after a good 2-0 win at East Thurrock United.

Alex Ferguson gave the Bluebirds a 28th minute lead.

And the visitors could relax when Josh Smile added a second in the 64th minute.
