Saturday`s Pre-Season Friendly Review...

By Steve Whitney

A pre-season Cheshire derby between now Vanarama National League North side Altrincham and National League neighbours Chester FC ended all-square at 2-2.

Kane Richards broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when he connected with a left-sided corner from Jordan Chapell.

Damian Reeves levelled matters early in the second half with a superb piece of skill to control a long ball from Sam Patterson before firing past Jon Worsnop from close range.

But substitute and former Blues striker Danny Hattersley headed the home side in front in the 79th minute with a header from a James Lawrie corner.

And James Alabi equalised in the 84th minute when he raced onto a through ball from Chapell and tucked the ball home.

Another National North versus National League encounter saw newcomers York City triumph 3-0 at Bower Fold against Stalybridge Celtic.

Simon Heslop, Scott Fenwick and Reece Thompson were on target as the Minstermen won their second pre-season friendly since suffering relegation from League Two.

Dagenham & Redbridge, who came down with York, beat Ryman League Division One North side Romford 4-0 in their third pre-season friendly.

Four second half goals from Oliver Hawkins, Christian Assombalonga from the spot, triallist Jordan Maguire-Drew and Keir Dickson saw the Daggers win the game comfortably after a first half of limited opportunities.

Sutton United, who came up from the National League South, enjoyed an excellent 2-1 home win over League Two giants Portsmouth.

The hosts dominated the first half and deservedly led at the break, thanks to goals from new signing Roarie Deacon, who ironically was on trial with Pompey earlier in the summer, and Bedsente Gomis.

But the visitors looked much stronger following a host of second half substitutions and grabbed a consolation through Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Maidstone United, who came up with the U`s, won 4-0 at one of the teams they met going the other way – relegated Welling United.

Goals from Kevin Lokko, Bobby-Joe Taylor, Callum Driver and Alex Flisher gave the Stones a comfortable win.

North Ferriby United, who came up via the National League North play-offs, went down 2-0 to Premier League newcomers Hull City's Development squad.

Despite the defeat. Ferriby can take a lot of positives from the game.

Solihull Moors, who pipped Ferriby to the title, were comprehensively beaten 5-0 at the Autotech Stadium by League One Walsall.

Two goals from ex-Dulwich Hamlet striker Erhun Oztumer and Amadou Bakayoko as well as a Florent Cuvelier strike saw the Saddlers run riot.

Last season`s National League runners-up and Promotion Finalists Forest Green Rovers went down to a 3-0 defeat at the New Lawn to Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City.

A strong Blues outfit scored through Michael Morrison, Jack Storer and Diego Fabbrini.

Forest Green`s league rivals Bromley were beaten 2-1 by Millwall at Hayes Lane.

Former FC Halifax Town striker Lee Gregory equalised for Millwall after
Tobi Sho-Silva punishing a weak header by Sid Nelson to give the hosts parity.

Fred Onyedinma had put the Lions ahead in the opening minutes.

Dover Athletic enjoyed a good 2-0 win over League Two side Leyton Orient at Crabble.

Dover opened the scoring after 28 minutes through Ricky Miller as he scored from a corner as Ricky Modeste got the assist.

Tyrone Marsh scored the Whites second from another set-piece as he doubled their lead in the 64th minute.

Barrow AFC and Championship side Nottingham Forest`s under-21s fought out a goalless draw at Holker Street.

Goals from Joe Devera, triallist Shaun Jeffers and Kenny Davis handed Boreham Wood their first win over Arsenal in three years they ran out 3-0 winners in the annual pre-season meeting between the sides.

Not since 2013 had Wood beaten the Premier League giants.

Torquay United were applauded from the pitch after a decent showing against League Two neighbours Plymouth Argyle at Plainmoor.

Nathan Blissett scored United's second half equaliser from the penalty spot after a first half goal from David Goodwillie had put Argyle.

Macclesfield Town travelled the relatively short distance to Harrison Park to take on Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South side Leek Town and won 3-1.

Danny Whitaker who broke the deadlock though after 12 minutes, with his shot slotting coolly into the bottom corner to give the Silkmen the lead.

Triallist Ollie Norburn doubled Macclesfield’s lead on 24 minutes, the midfielder capping off an excellent move with a calm finish.

Jack Sampson made it 3-0 to the Silkmen on the 50th minute when his shot from the outside the box beat the Leek keeper.

Leek pulled a goal back just 6 minutes later though, as they were awarded a penalty which Ryan Dicker converted.

New-look Aldershot Town suffered a 3-0 defeat at Beveree, home of newly-promoted National League South side Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Gary Waddock’s side began well and forced a lot of the only running. However, it was the home side who took an early lead from the penalty spot, after Jim Kellermann was adjudged to have tripped Jamal Lowe in the penalty area.

Tom Jelley sent Shots` keeper Phil Smith the wrong way with his spot-kick to give the Beavers a 6th minute lead.

A sustained period of Shots pressure followed before, Hampton then won a second penalty. This time, Smith was the culprit, catching Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick inside the area. Once again Jelley sent Smith the wrong way and with just 23 mins gone the home side had doubled their early lead.

On 64 minutes Hampton scored a third, Nicke Kabamba slotting home from close range.

Gateshead were beaten 2-1 at the International Stadium by League One Bradford City.

First half goals from Billy Clarke and Paul Anderson had the Bantams in cruise control at the interval, with Ryan Bowman converting a late penalty for the Heed.

A second-half goal from Ashley Grimes was the difference as Southport registered their second win of pre-season at NPL Premier Division Marine AFC.

The summer signing from Barrow, scored 3 minutes after half-time.

Wrexham won 2-1 at Welsh Premier side Rhyl.

After waves of pressure Wrexham finally took the lead after 23 minutes from a well hit strike from John Rooney, but Rhyl defended well for the rest of the half, and clear cut chances were at a premium.

Another terrific strike from Rooney on the 71st minute doubled the Dragons lead.

But just a few minutes later Rhyl managed to reduce the deficit from a Tom Hartley free-kick from 20-yards out.

Lincoln City produced a fine 4-1 win at Sincil Bank against a Reading XI.

Only 30 seconds in, James Caton rifled in a low drive from the edge of the box following a defensive mix up.

A minute later it got even better for the Imps. Jack Muldoon raced through the Reading defence and slotted into the bottom corner.

The Imps did make it 3-0 shortly after the restart when Waterfall headed home a Taylor Miles cross in the 49th minute.

Reading scored a consolation goal in the 83rd minute. A lovely touch from Harry Cardwell set Sam Smith through on goal to slot past Richard Walton.

Lincoln then went straight down the other end to make it 4-1. Bradley Wood’s excellent run got him one-on-one with the keeper and he passed the ball into the bottom corner.

National League North club Harrogate Town recorded their second pre-season win as NPL First Division North side Hyde United were put to the sword at The CNG Stadium

Trialist Jordan Robertson gave the home side a deserved lead 34 minutes in, capitalising on a defensive mix-up before Dominic Knowles coolly finished three minutes later.

With seven Town changes made in the second half, Robertson added a third late on after a clever flick had found the striker unmarked inside the Hyde area.

Harrogate`s league rivals AFC Telford United went down to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Championship newcomers Aston Villa at the New Bucks Head.

Despite a Villa side featuring the likes of Jordan Ayew, Ashley Westwood and Rudy Gestede, it would be the hosts who took the lead. Telford striker David Hibbert gave the home side the lead within 3 minutes, firing past new signing Pierluigi Gollini.

Villa continued to pressurize the Telford defence, but James Montgomery in the Telford goal kept the likes of Ayew, Gestede and Scott Sinclair at bay.

However, in the 81st minute, Telford’s resilience was finally broken after Ayew fired home from inside the area.

As the game approached the final stages, Villa found time for a late winner, as Aly Cissokho managed to nod home Ayew’s cross.

Another Villa side travelled to Telford`s league rivals Worcester City and earned a more comprehensive 5-1 win.

But, like at Telford, they had to come back from a goal down when a stunning free-kick from Matt Birley put City one-up.

Jack Grealish levelled for Villa after 11 minutes and Libor Kozak added a second on 27 minutes.

Teenager Rushian Hepburn-Murphy scored a superb individual goal for Villa after 50 minutes.

Four minutes from time Keinan Davis slotted the ball home after good work on the left from Hepburn-Murphy to make it 4-1.

And Davis` second of the afternoon made it a nap hand for Roberto De Matteo`s new charges.

National League North newcomers Kidderminster Harriers were beaten 2-1 at Aggborough by a strong Premier League West Bromwich Albion side.

It was a comfortable win for the Baggies in front of a crowd of over 3,000, but Harriers can be proud of their contribution.

Early on Saido Berahino shot straight at Sam Hornby in the Harriers goal, but he made no mistake in the 17th minute when Salomon Rondon clipped a ball over the top to leave him one-on-one with the keeper.

In the 58th minute Berahino added his second with a finish of sheer class after Ashley Carter inadvertently gave Albion the ball.

A couple of step-overs left his defender for dead before a lifted finish over the triallist keeper doubled Albion's lead and his tally for the day.

The home side had plenty of possession and 9 minutes from time one of their triallists converted a penalty after Jonathan Leko bundled over another triallist in the box.

National League Promotion Final winners Grimsby Town sent a youthful side to National League North Alfreton Town`s Impact Arena and won 1-0.

New signing from Sutton United, Tom Bolarinwa, scored the only goal of the game just before half-time.

Brackley Town enjoyed a good 4-2 win at St James`s Park against League One new boys and county neighbours Northampton Town.

Alex Gudger gave the Saints a 10th minute lead that Marc Richards cancelled out almost immediately.

David Moyo restored Brackley’s lead midway through the first half, racing onto a loose ball before rounding Adam Smith and slotting home.

The Cobblers were once again back on level terms before half-time, Aaron Phillips pin-point right-wing cross headed in at the far post by Alex Revell.

The topsy-turvy nature of the game continued at the start of the second half when Brackley re-took the lead for a third time, Matt Lowe converting Jack Bowen’s knock down.

The Cobblers were really piling on the pressure but it was Brackley who added to their lead on 62 minutes when Moyo turned in a cross at the back post.

Brackley`s new league rivals, FA Trophy winners FC Halifax Town, had to be content with a late 1-1 draw at Westfield Lane against NPL Premier Division side Frickley Athletic.

The Shaymen opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Connor Hughes burst down the left wing, biding his time, before sweeping the ball across the face of goal for Jordan Burrow to finish into the empty net.

Frickley equalised near the end of the game when new Shaymen keeper Steven Drench misread a long ball from the home defence, before falling backwards to see the ball bounce over him and trickle into the empty net.

Rees Longville-Daley’s 90th minute finish saw NPL First Division South side Spalding United knock Boston United out of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup.

Poor defending allowed the Tulips defender to net the only goal of the game at the death.

Nathan Whitehead’s low free-kick trickled into the Pilgrims’ penalty area, where new keeper Christian Dibble failed the gather the ball before indecision in the defence allowed Longville-Daley the simple task of prodding home and settling the contest.

Spalding`s league rivals Lincoln United also upset the odds to progress in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup by beating another National League North outfit, much-changed Gainsborough Trinity, who are the holders of the trophy.

Ashley Worsfold gave Trinity an interval lead, only for Matt Cotton to equalise.

Micheal Jacklin headed the hosts 2-1 up with 7 minutes remaining – a lead they held on to.

National League North new boys Darlington 1883 were hammered 5-1 at home by Peter Beardsley’s Newcastle United under-21s.

Haris Vuckic, Ivan Toney, Cal Roberts, Lubomir Satka and substitute Sean Longstaff were on target for United, while Liam Hardy pulled a goal back for the home side.

Rochdale also sent a side to Curzon Ashton and triumphed 3-1.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing bagged a brac and Joe Bunney one, with Paul Ennis replying for the Nash.

Not far away at Moor Lane, National League North newcomers Salford City were beaten 4-1 by another League One outfit, Fleetwood Town.

Goals from Jimmy Ryan, Ashley Hunter and Nick Haughton with two sealed the Cod Army`s win, although the Ammies did at least have the consolation of scoring the best goal of the afternoon – a great strike from 20 yards by new signing Michael Nottingham.

Fleetwood`s close neighbours, AFC Fylde, shared a 3-3 draw at NPL Premier Division Nantwich Town`s Weaver Stadium.

Goals from Steve Jones with two and Jonny Kapend saw the Dabbers lead 3-0 by the 48th minute.

But the Coasters mounted a superb comeback to pull level through Danny Rowe, Sam Finley and Matt Blinkhorn.

Tamworth beat NPL Premier Division side Barwell 2-1.

Greg Mills and Louis Ezewele won it for the Lambs, with Ben Ward-Cochrane having pulled the Canaries level 8 minutes from time.

Danny Wright's fourth pre-season goal and a last-minute header from Asa Hall made it four wins in a week for National League champions Cheltenham Town as the Robins won at National League South side Bath City.

Premier League Watford shared a second successive pre-season 0-0 draw, this time with Bath`s league rivals St Albans City.

It followed a goalless draw at Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division newcomers Kings Langley last Tuesday night.

Margate held League One side AFC Wimbledon to a 1-1 draw at Hartsdown Park.

The Dons named a strong starting eleven but fell behind in the 17th minute as Margate striker Elliott Buchanan toe-poked the home side in front.

AFC Wimbledon were awarded a controversial penalty in the 31st minute as Manny Parry was penalised for a high foot.

Despite Lyle Taylor seeing his effort from 12 yards out saved by keeper Charlie Grainger, one of the hottest properties in League football hammered in the rebound to make it 1-1.

Much-changed Bishop`s Stortford suffered a 6-0 hammering at the ProKit UK Stadium by League Two neighbours Stevenage.

Goals from Charlie Lee, a triallist, Ben Kennedy, Jamie Gray, Tom Conlon and Matt Godden completed a comfortable afternoon's work for Boro.

One of several triallists scored the only goal for Whitehawk as they beat Ryman League Division One South side Burgess Hill Town 1-0.

Weston-super-Mare suffered a 6-0 Woodsrping Park drubbing by Championship newcomers Barnsley, for whom new signing from Dover Athletic, Stefan Payne, netted a hat-trick.

Concord Rangers earned a last-gasp 1-1 draw at Ryman Division One South champions Folkestone Invicta.

Tom Stephens levelled in the 89th minute for the Beachboys after new boy Sam Beale had given Invicta a 42nd minute lead.
