Saturday`s Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying Round Review

By Steve Whitney

Evo-Stik League North newcomers South Shields caused one of Saturday`s biggest upsets in the Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying Round by beating Vanarama National League North side Darlington FC 3-0 at their own Blackwell Meadows ground.

The Ebac Northern League and Buildbase FA Vase champions took an early 7th minute lead through Dillon Morse.

And 20 minutes later, they doubled their advantage with Carl Finnigan`s close range finish.

And a minute from time, the substantial away following in the 1,814 crowd were celebrating as Finnigan made it 3-0 just in front of them with a minute to go.

Not far away, Darlington`s league rivals Blyth Spartans – more used to creating cup upsets – became giantkilled themselves as they were knocked out by upwardly mobile Evo-Stik League Premier high-flyers Shaw Lane AFC at Croft Park.

Paul Clayton opened the scoring for the visitors on 6 minutes.

Substitute Adam Wrightson then smashed home on 57 minutes, to give the Spartans hope.

However, those hopes were dashed 5 minutes into time added on when sub Damien Reeves headed into an empty after a defensive mix-up.

Another National League North side to bow out against lower league opposition were Tamworth, who lost 1-0 at Marston Road against Evo-Stik Premier outfit Stafford Rangers.

The only goal of the game came from Izak Reid in the 63rd minute.

Evo-Stik League South club Weymouth caused an upset by ousting National League South newcomers Chippenham Town from the competition at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

These teams were league rivals only last season, but it still has to go down as a `shock` - especially as the Terras won with ten-men after Calvin Brooks received a second yellow card 15 minutes from time.

The home side were already two-up by then with goals from Charlie Davis after 26 minutes and Mark Cooper 5 minutes after the break.

Bostik League North side Haringey Borough created another upset by knocking out Chippenham`s league rivals Welling United – and on their own Park View Road patch to boot.

Ralston Gabriel gave Boro a great start with the opener after 5 minutes.

Florent Bojaj equalised just shy of the hour-mark, but a Gabriel penalty 11 minutes from time earned the Essex side a great win.

National League North side Boston United almost became Midland League minnows Haughmond`s latest FA Cup victims, but they will have to do it again as a late Scott Ryan goal earned the lower league side a replay.

The Pilgrims dominated proceedings against the side three divisions below them in the Pyramid, but the failure to convert chances cost them.

Jan Yeomans had given the hosts the lead, but a combination of brave defending and poor decision making ensured the two sides will meet again on Tuesday night with the prospects of another Haughmond upset very much on the cards.

Boston`s league rivals Alfreton Town also face a testing away replay as they were held to a 2-2 draw at the Impact Arena by Evo-Stik South East side AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

However, the Brakes left it late at Allpay Park, and just when time looked to be ticking away from them the breakthrough arrived, Colby Bishop rising highest to power a header into the roof of the net 5 minutes from time.

The striker then helped to make the game safe deep into stoppage time as he was fouled by Matt Sysum - the Westfields centre-back receiving a red card.

Rob Thompson-Brown stepped up to convert the penalty.

National League South side Braintree Town face a tricky midweek replay after being held to a 2-2 draw at Cressing Road by Evo-Stik League South Premier newcomers Royston Town.

Royston held the lead at half-time through Scott Bridges, so the hosts had to come from behind after the break, but after getting their noses in front with goals by Luke Allan and Karl Oliyide, they would have fancied going on to win.

However, Royston showed their mettle and came back to grab an equaliser through Adam Marriott.

Royston were forced to play the final 7 minutes a man short and two fouls by Romelle Alomenu within 60 seconds of each other saw the Crows full-back receive two bookings and a red card.

But on 38 minutes, Sam Avery was sent for an early shower after fouling Stefan Brown in the box, although it appeared the Hungerford man had tripped on the ball.

The striker stepped up, and duly sent Hadler the wrong way from the spot just before half-time.
