Saturday`s Emirates FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round Review

By Steve Whitney

Evo-Stik League South Premier club Hereford FC maintained the Bulls name in FA Cup folklore by causing the upset of the round to date in ousting Vanarama National League side Eastleigh from the competition on their own Silverlake Stadium patch on Saturday

Mike McGrath's deflected cross opened the scoring for the Bulls after 14 minutes, before Garyn Preen added a second 2 minutes before half-time.

In the second half, a nasty injury for Garyn Preen saw him unconscious for a period and after regaining consciousness he was taken to Southampton hospital.

Callum Howe then netted for the hosts 12 minutes from time, but it wasn't enough to stop Hereford progressing and adding another notch on the FA Cup giant-killing board.

National League North side Kidderminster Harriers caused a minor upset by beating National League outfit Chester FC at Aggborough.

The biggest crowd of the season watched on as goals in each half from Mani Sonupe after 19 minutes and Joe Ironside 5 minutes from time booked Harriers' place in the next round.

Harriers` league rivals Gainsborough Trinity also caused something of an upset by eliminating high-flying league rivals Harrogate Town from the 2-1 at The CNG Stadium.

Town had led at half-time through Josh Falkingham’s strike, but saw their advantage vanish seconds after the restart as Nathan Jarman headed home a free-kick.

Trinity then took the lead on the hour-mark as Michael Jacklin converted a corner at the back post, and though Town threw men forward looking for an equaliser, it never arrived as Simon Weaver’s side suffered only a second defeat in their last nineteen matches.

Evo-Stik League North outfit Ossett Town came close to causing the day`s biggest shock but will have to settle for another shot at National League side Solihull Moors after sharing a 1-1 draw at the Automated Technology Group Stadium.

Shepherd Murombedzi opened the scoring for the home side after some good work from Oladapo Afolayan, before Corey Gregory forced a replay with a goal shortly before half-time.

The Town man was later sent-off for a strong challenge on Moors defender Kristian Green.

Joe Pigott scored a 95th minute equaliser to keep Maidstone United in the competition after a tale of three penalties at the Gallagher Stadium against Bostik League Premier side Enfield Town.

Zavon Hines had one spot-kick ruled out in bizarre circumstances and saw a second saved while Darren Purse converted to leave Enfield on the brink of reaching round one.

But deep into stoppage time, Jamar Loza hit the post and Pigott pounced for the leveller.

Earlier, Town led through Simon Thomas but Alex Wynter levelled in the final minute of the first half.

National League North side Brackley Town were held to a 3-3 draw at St James`s Park by ambitious Bostik Premier outfit Billericay Town.

Described by many in the crowd as one of the best games seen on the ground in years, Brackley showed plenty of character to come back twice with ten-men and earn a second chance in Essex next week.

Glenn Walker gave the hosts the boost of an early 2nd minute lead.

But Brackley had Alex Gudger sent-off just prior to half-time as the whistle went.

Adam Cunnington equalised immediately after the break

And then on 71 minutes, Louie Theophanous put the visitors in front.

But the ten-man battled back to level through Adam Walker on 66 minutes, only for Cunnington to grab his second 11 minutes later to put Billericay back in front.

However, Shane Byrne pulled the hosts level in stoppage time.

In all-National League ties, AFC Fylde beat Wrexham 1-0 at Mill Farm.

A 37th minute strike from prolific marksman Danny Rowe proved to be the difference to earn the Coasters progress into the First Round and see Wrexham exit at the Fourth Qualifying Round stage for a third consecutive season.
FC Halifax Town were knocked out at the first hurdle after a 3-1 defeat by Tranmere Rovers at The Shay.

Goals from Connor Jennings after 5 minutes, James Norwood right on half-time and Liam Ridehalgh on 57 minutes eased Tranmere through, with Town briefly enjoying parity after an own goal by Steve McNulty in the 20th minute.

Scott Rendell’s 79th minute header saw Aldershot Town through at the EBB Stadium against Torquay United.

Adam McDonnell’s superb, left-wing cross was perfect for Rendell to guide a header into the far corner of the net and seal the home side’s progress.

The eagerly-awaited East London derby between Dagenham & Redbridge and Leyton Orient finished in a rather disappointing goalless draw, as did the Kent derby between Dover Athletic and Bromley at Crabble.

Hartlepool United sealed their place in the next round with a 2-1 victory over Evo-Stik League North side South Shields at Mariner's Park.

It was the hosts who took a 26th minute lead through Carl Finnigan but Pools hit two quick-fire second half goals through Devante Rodney and Nicky Deverdics to seal the win.

The early kick-off saw National League side Boreham Wood triumph 3-1 at Clarence Park against National League South hosts St Albans City in front of the BBC Sport camera.

Bruno Andrade opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty in the 13th minute, and Shaun Jeffers doubled the lead 5 minutes before the break.

Jeffers then set up the third, threading through Andrade on 49 minutes to round the goalkeeper and get his second of the afternoon.

Managed by former Wood gaffer Ian Allinson, the Saints grabbed a 66th minute consolation as Zane Banton struck from just inside the box.

Bostik Premier side Burgess Hill's Town's dreams of reaching the First Round were shattered by a single goal defeat at home to National League South visitors Dartford.

The Darts took the lead in the 8th minute when Alfie Pavey put away from short-range after an initial attempt by Tom Murphy was spilled by keeper Max Huxter.

In all-National League South ties, Truro City made club and Cornwall football history after beating rivals Hampton & Richmond Borough to make it through to the First Round – the first Cornish side to do so since 1969!

Striker Noah Keats scored both goals in the second half and White Tigers keeper Tom McHale was also a hero after saving a penalty with just 10 minutes to go in the game.

Bath City and Chelmsford City drew a blank at Twerton Park and must replay in Essex next week, while Oxford City edged through 1-0 at Marsh Farm against Bognor Regis Town.

City took a 32nd minute lead through Matt Paterson, but it could have been more as the same player missed a penalty right on half-time.

And the Rocks` hopes of getting back into the game virtually ended 13 minutes from time when they had Calvin Davies sent-off for a second bookable offence.

In the other all-National League North ties, Chorley and Boston United shared one of several goalless draws on the day at the inappropriately-named Victory Park, while AFC Telford United went through 3-1 at the New Bucks Head against FC United of Manchester.

In a thrilling encounter, Marcus Dinanga broke the deadlock to give the home side a 52nd minute lead.

Craig Lindfield equalised in the 76th minute.

Two minutes into stoppage time, Dinanga gave the Bucks the lead again from the spot after he had been brought down.

And then a minute later, Lussey made it 3-1.

Evo-Stik League Premier side Buxton are out, beaten 2-1 at Silverlands by National League outfit Gateshead.

Paddy McLaughlin gave the Tynesiders a 28th minute lead that Jordan Burrows doubled from the spot a minute before half-time.

Experienced striker Liam Hardy reduced the deficit in the 67th minute, but the full-timers saw the game out to go into Monday evening`s draw.

Buxton`s league rivals Stourbridge, who have a proud record in the FA Cup in recent seasons, found Gateshead`s league rivals Macclesfield Town much too much for them at the War Memorial Ground.

The Glassboys were simply no match for a very impressive Silkmen, who led 3-0 at the break through Danny Whitehead after 10 minutes, Tyrone Walsh 3 minutes later and Elliott Durrell right on the whistle.

Koby Arthur added a fourth on 67 minutes, with Scott Burgess making it a nap hand 12 minutes from time.

"It was tough to watch," admitted Stourbridge boss Gary Hackett. "You have to acknowledge that we were beaten by the better team on the day.

"We always knew it was going to be a tough task. Macclesfield didn’t have a weak player in their side and showed a lot of quality."

Macclesfield`s rivals Guiseley AFC may be struggling in the league, but they enjoyed themselves in the cup as they ensured Ebac Northern League minnows Shildon weren`t able to capture the Saturday evening headlines in emphatic fashion.

The Lions ran out 6-0 winners, although the Railwaymen held their hosts to 0-0 at the break.

Mike Fondop opened the scoring 7 minutes after the restart and 3 minutes later an Andy Haworth chip doubled the scoring.

John Rooney made it game over from the spot on the hour-mark, with Will Hatfield bagging a brace on 71 and 80 minutes and Fondop his second in stoppage time.

No upset at York Road where National Leaguers Maidenhead United edged out National League South side Havant & Waterlooville 2-1.

But the Magpies – last season`s National League South champions – left it late.

Sam Barratt gave the home side a 23rd minute lead.

Jason Prior equalised 4 minutes after half-time.

Ryan Upward popped up with the winner in the first minute of time added on at the end of the game.

Maidenhead`s league rivals Sutton United faced another banana skin as they travelled west to take on Evo-Stik South West side Paulton Rovers.

But the U`s – who famously made it to the Fifth Round last season – edged through 3-2.

Sutton took a 10th minute lead through Kieron Cadogan.

But 8 minutes later, Josh Ford pulled Rovers back on level terms.

However, 4 minutes after half-time, Cadogan restored the U`s lead and on 54 minutes Louis John extended it.

Dave Sims pulled it back to 2-3 in the 72nd minute, but the visitors held firm.

National League South side Concord Rangers will have home advantage now after holding Sutton`s neighbours and league rivals Woking to a 1-1 Kingfield draw.

Steve Cawley gave the Beachboys the lead after 35 minutes.

The Cards eventually equalised 7 minutes from time through Jamie Philpot.

National League side Ebbsfleet United face a replay on Tuesday night after being held 0-0 by National League South hosts East Thurock United.
