York City’s caretaker manager watched his team twice come from behind to pinch a point at Nuneaton Borough.
Jon Parkin salvaged a 2-2 draw for the Minstermen but it wasn’t enough to send them into the National League North’s top seven.
Collins, in interim charge since Martin Gray’s exit in mid-August, still doesn’t know if he’s done enough to earn the job.
But he hopes the unity on show proves that he is the right man for the role as the interview process continues.
“In the end I’m happy with the point,” he told the National League’s Oli Osborn. “We didn’t play as well as we did recently, so to come away with a point after twice being behind? We’re pleased with that.
“It’s probably a good result. We weren’t great, but we showed character and I am delighted with that.
“We didn’t create anything in the first half so we decided to change the style.
“I have been working on us trying to adapt when we need to adapt. We know we’ve got goals in the team and we showed we can pull something out of the bag.”
He says a strong bench can make all the difference and added: “I’m really fortunate to know we’ve got those kind of options to come on.
“The group is strong and we can change it when we need to. People call me inexperienced as a manager, but I’ve been coaching for 12 years. Since day one the players have been great with me.”
