The Ammies have ear-marked the defender for big things as the 19-year-old joins the National League North champions.
Despite being out of contract, the clubs have agreed a fee - something which needed to happen because of his age.
Salford expect Jones to shine in the years ahead and say they beat off competition from a number of clubs to earn his signature.
“We are delighted to announce the signing of central defender James Jones from National League North Chester,” Salford said in a statement.
“James is a highly promising central defender who has been at Chester since he was 14.
“He was selected for Jamie Vardy’s V9 Academy earlier this summer and looks set for a bright future.
“After his contract at Chester ended James was offered new terms. Understandably there was interest in the 19 year-old from elsewhere but he has opted to sign a two-year deal at the Peninsula Stadium.
“Very much one for the future, we would like to extend a very warm welcome.”
