Jim Gannon's side have had a mixed start to the season but produced a fine display yesterday evening - watch match highlights here.
Matthew Warburton gave the hosts the perfect start, netting after two minutes, and Southport's night quickly got worse as Adam Dugdale conceded a penalty and was sent off in process.
James Ball converted the spot kick and then Harry Winter and Jason Oswell both scored before half-time.
Ball and Oswell netted again in the second half to complete the rout.
"My frustration has been that we don't grab the game by the scruff of the neck and impose ourselves but we did that tonight," said manager Gannon. "I said to the front three that you have to get in behind and create your own crosses - the first goal summed that up.
"We know those three can hurt defences and that's what we've invested in. We haven't seen the best of them all in every game but if they can get into a groove and into form, they're going to be a handful for any team.
"All I want is players to show what they've got and I think tonight many of them did that. What a statement against a team that has paid a fee for a player and are chasing others.
"The ruthlessness was there. It was a four-pointer, I know that's a strange statement, but the three points put us in the top 10, the six goals have put us into the play-offs."
