In the live BT Sport game on Saturday afternoon they overcome a spirited Eastleigh to add weight to their title challenge.
A third win from four games was sealed by Andy Cook who continued his great form with a double - and a fantastic 35-yard goal.
Mellon saluted his side and their recovery from last weekend’s torrid 2-1 defeat at Boreham Wood.
“The stakes are so high now and we had to stand our ground against an Eastleigh team who had nothing to lose,” he said. “It’s important we get other sides thinking about us.
“We were strong and scored some terrific goals. We weren’t perfect, we will keep trying to improve and we will go in on Monday and try and work on things that weren’t 100 per cent.
“The players showed that they are ready for this stage of the season and that they are ready to get the results.”
Cook is now closing in on AFC Fylde’s Danny Rowe as the battle to become the division’s top scorer gathers pace.
“Andy Cook has been fantastic and it was some goal,” Mellon said. “He had a lot of strength and balance, don’t think that has he hair crashed that. To get that type of dip on the ball from there, he takes a lot of credit for that.
“It didn’t bother me about bouncing back from a defeat, it’s just about winning the next game. We are expected to win every game, we play under those conditions and we embrace that.
“We are edging towards touching distance and then you never know. We now have another big battle at Dover on Good Friday - we know exactly how that game is going to be and we have got to be ready.”
