Round-Up: Vanarama National League South

By Steve Whitney

The cities of Chelmsford and St Albans continue to lead the way in the Vanarama National League South, but East Thurrock United are still yet to taste defeat in 2017/18.

The Clarets and the Saints both had to make do with home draws, however.

Chelmsford were ahead after just 8 minutes through experienced forward Lee Barnard.

However, lowly Weston-super-Mare grabbed a very good point, courtesy of an 82nd minute Rapai Irnti equaliser, although the Seagulls` boss Marc McGregor was disappointed his side didn`t get all three points!

A dramatic stoppage time equaliser by Sergio Torres earned Eastbourne
Borough a 2-2 draw at Clarence Park against St Albans.

Torres struck from close range after persistent, squeezing pressure from the Sports, to cap a superb come-back.

The home side had the better of the first half and finally breached the Boro defences right on half-time with two goals in a minute from tom Gardiner and Zane Banton.

But Yemi Odubade pulled a goal back from the penalty spot 6 minutes after the break, and Torres earned a point for Jamie Howell`s side.

An enthralling game at Marsh Farm saw in-form East Thurrock come back from behind three times to draw with Oxford City.

The Hoops took the lead after just 4 minutes as Portsmouth loanee Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain's low cross found Dave Pearce at the near post.

However, Sam Higgins' sublime finish from a free-kick saw them pegged back within 9 minutes.

The Hoops re-took the lead in the 35th minute as Matt Paterson rounded the keeper and the defender on the line to tap home.

Oxlade-Chamberlain should have doubled the lead on the stroke of half time but his header from close range passed inches wide of the far post.

The Rocks came out from the break with all guns blazing their relentless pressure was finally rewarded as Cristian Navarro diverted a good cross into his own net after 64 minutes.

The goal revitalised City and a corner gave them the route back into the game that they needed, Reece Fleet rising highest at the near post to nod home 10 minutes later.

East Thurrock though were undeterred and showed why they have remained unbeaten all season as Lee Burns met an excellent cross to tie the game up for a third and final time 11 minutes from time.

Truro City were the day`s biggest winners, hammering win-less bottom-markers Whitehawk 7-2 at Treyew Road.

The White Tigers got their noses in front on 8 minutes as Noah Keats found the net following a slick move.

The second arrived on 16 minutes when some good link-up play on the left ended with Tyler Harvey presented with an opportunity which he dispatched.

The visitors were able to reduce the arrears shortly afterwards through Ramone Rose but Keats hit back with a crucial goal to make it 3-1 going into the break.

Keats completed his hat-trick on 55 minutes to really put us in the driving seat and Cody Coode strode through to make it 5-1 on the hour-mark.

There was an own goal by former Torquay United defender, Oneil Odofin to make it 6-1 as the visitors struggled to clear their lines from a corner.

On 82 minutes, Liam Gordon was able to pull a goal back for the hosts, but Alex Hartridge got his name on the scoresheet to make it 7-2 with a couple of minutes remaining.

Gloucester City lost for the second time in a week as they were defeated at Evesham by Havant & Waterlooville.

The deadlock was broken 17 minutes from time after City were down to ten-men momentarily after Sam Avery went off injurd. With City disadvantaged, Theo Widdrington slotted home what proved to be the winner.

Dartford swept newly-promoted Chippenham Town aside at Princes Park, running out comfortable 3-0 winners.

Ryan Hayes set up two goals and scored another.

The club's longest-serving player set up Alfie Pavey for number one after 26 minutes and then Andy Pugh for the second on 69 minutes.

Hayes then scored the third himself with 13 minutes remaining.

Nat Jarvis stepped off the bench to snatch Bath City at Concord Rangers.

It was a second win in a week for the Romans after their midweek triumph over Oxford City.

Home side Rangers had the better of a drab first half without ever looking as though they would break through, largely due to their own profligacy.

It was City, however, that left with the points as Jarvis headed in Jack Compton’s cross with 18 minutes remaining.

Hemel Hempstead Town came out on top of a seven-goal thriller at Vauxhall Road against relegated Braintree Town.

Despite falling behind to a 21st minute Charlie Sheringham effort, Braintree responded well to take a 2-1 lead into half-time with goals from Scott Shulton and a Taylor Miles own goal.

Hemel took advantage of a crazy 10-minute spell after the break by scoring three goals from Rowan Liburd, James Kaloczi and Jordan Parkes, and although the Iron added a third from Phil Roberts with 15 minutes to go, they were left frustrated.

Wealdstone bounced back from their midweek hammering at Weston-super-Mare by scoring an impressive 3-0 victory over Bognor Regis Town at Grosvenor Vale to climb out of the relegation zone.

A spectacular first half free-kick from Danny Green began the scoring a=in the 38th minute before two quick-fire second half goals in the 71st and 77th minutes from defenders Ryan Sellers and Ciaron Brown sealed victory.

It was manager Bobby Wilkinson’s first win as Stones boss since his arrival from Hungerford Town two weeks ago.

Wilkinson`s former side battled back from two-down at their Bulpit Lane home to share a 2-2 draw with Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Max Kretzschmar gave the Beavers the lead from a 21st minute penalty.

That was the scoreline at the break, and then 7 minutes into the second period, Malachi Napa doubled the visitors lead.

But the battling Crusaders reduced the deficit through James Clark on 66 minutes and then, 5 minutes from time, Nick Bignall grabbed an equaliser.

Welling United completed a 2-0 Park View Road win over Poole Town.

It was goalless at the break, but just 9 minutes into the second half, new loan signing from Colchester, Eli Phipps, weaved his way into the box and opened the scoring via the Poole keeper.

And on 71 minutes, victory was completed when Joe Healy glanced home a header.
