The Rocks were not at their best as the visitors dominated for long periods, and deservedly led through Matty Whichelow`s 13th minute effort.
That looked as though it was going to be enough to end East Thurrock`s unbeaten start, but in the 89th minute, a Lewis Smith free-kick found Sam Higgins at the near post and he hammered home with the aid of a deflection.
St Albans City`s great start to the season is beginning to shudder to a halt as Ian Allinson`s side suffered a second successive defeat.

But 2 minutes before the break, the Iron were back on level terms when Phil Roberts was brought down in the box and Billy Crook netted the resulting penalty.
And then 15 minutes from time, Roberts got on the end of a fine Allen through ball to score at the near post.
Six minutes later, Roberts hit the post, and after a nervy last few minutes, Braintree came out with all three points.
Jamie Howell earned his first home win as manager of Eastbourne Borough after a 4-2 win over newly-promoted Chippenham Town.
The game couldn't have started much worse for The Sports as David Pratt was able to capitalise on a defensive error with under a minute played, but after 18 minutes Jamie Taylor equalised after latching onto a superb ball by Nathaniel Pinney.
Chippenham re-took the lead 10 minutes before the break through Andy Sandell, but on the stroke of half-time Taylor hit an effort from 20 yards out which went into the back of the net via a deflection off the post to keep the scores level at the interval.
Boro started the second half flying as Charlie Harris put them 3-2 up after a superb header.
This seemed to spur Chippenham on and Bailey Vose made a fantastic save to preserve the lead, denying earlier scorer Pratt.
But it was to be Boro's day however as Sports` captain Sergio Torres broke through the visitors` defence after a brilliant run to seal a 4-2 victory.

Hungerford Town achieved a third win of the season to date, beating struggling Concord Rangers 2-0 at Bulpit Lane.
However, it could have been a much different story had it not been for a fine performance by new Crusaders keeper Lewis Ward.
He produced several excellent saves, including a Steve Cawley penalty just before half-time awarded against joint caretaker boss Ian Herring for handball.
