Round Up: Vanarama National League North

By Steve Whitney

Brackley Town suffered their first defeat of the season in the Vanarama National League North on Saturday, going down to a 2-0 defeat at Moor Lane to a now second-placed Salford City outfit.

The Northamptonshire side travelled north having won six and drawn trhree of their opening nine games, while the Ammies themselves had lost only once to date.

The hosts got the boost of a goal just a couple of minutes before half-time when, after Mike Phenix`s initial shot had been saved by Daniel Lewis, Jack Redshaw snapped up the rebound from close range.

And 8 minutes into a second half which Salford were generally dominant, Redshaw doubled their lead – again from close in.

However, it`s Harrogate Town who top the early table after an emphatic 5-1 win at the New Bucks Head against AFC Telford United.

Telford, who have now lost all five of their home games, started this one well and took the lead through Anthony Dwyer after 20 minutes.

Jake Wright levelled 6 minutes later, but the Bucks capitulated in the second half.

Ben Parker, Jack Emmett, George Thomson and Wright again made it a nap hand for Town, and to make matters worse for the home side, they gad Connor Johnson dismissed for two bookings.

Promoted Blyth Spartans also hit five on Saturday at Croft Park against Boston United.

Daniel Maguire scored his first two either side of Nathan Buddle’s header, which saw the home side race to a 3-0 lead inside 14 minutes.

The striker then smashed home his third on 37 minutes, before Harry Vince scored on the stroke of half-time for the Pilgrims.

Boston reduced their deficit further on 71 minutes through substitute Karl Hawley, but Jarrett Rivers restored Spartans three-goal lead just 8 minutes later – as Blyth`s hat-trick of wins in a week saw them up into fourth place in the table.

York City made it back-to-back wins with a 2-0 Bootham Crescent success against Stockport County.

The Minstermen took a 19th minute lead when Simon Heslop scored with a low shot through a sea of legs.

And on 28 minutes it was 2-0 with a fine solo effort from Amari Morgan-Smith, who curled home a beauty from 20 yards.

Stockport probably edged the second period without managing to trouble the scorers.

Tamworth moved into the top six after inflicting a third defeat on promoted Spennymoor Town at The Lamb.

The home side took a 10th minute lead when Bradley Reid headed past Dan Lowson from close range.

They held that lead until 4 minutes after the break when Kallum Griffiths fired home a direct free-kick.

But on 55 minutes, Darryl Knights drove the ball into the corner of the net to re-establish Tamworth`s advantage.

And the Lambs made sure of the points 4 minutes from time when Knights scored his second set-piece of the game.

Southport, hammered 6-0 at Stockport in midweek, suffered another defeat on Saturday, this time 3-0 at the Merseyrail Community Stadium to inconsistent Kidderminster Harriers.

After withstanding some pressure at the start of the game, Harriers were good value for a lead at the break, thanks to Will Longbottom’s first goal for the club after 26 minutes.

Longbottom turned supplier for Andre Brown 7 minutes after the break to make it 2-0, Brown doing things all on his own in the final 3 minutes as his solo effort, curling into the top corner, sealed the points.

FC United of Manchester suffered a third successive defeat at the Tameside Stadium against neighbouring Curzon Ashton.

A goal from Max Leonard 3 minutes before half-time sealed the Reds` fate.

Alfreton Town found their scoring boots at the Impact Arena against struggling Gainsborough Trinity.

The Reds were in front after just 7 minutes through Tom Platt.

And they virtually killed the game off within the next 10 minutes as Craig Westcarr and Ricardo German added two more.

Brendon Daniels made it 4-0 with still only 25 minutes gone on the clock.

The hosts relaxed a little after that and Trinity `won` the second half with an 85th minute Bradley Wells reply.

Tom Elliott gave Nuneaton Town the boost of an early 6th minute lead at the Horsfall Stadium against Bradford Park Avenue.

Oli Johnson's deflected effort ended the scoring in the 20th minute.

But Boro`s debutant Joel Dielna was sent-off in the 54th minute as he picked up his second yellow, leaving the visitors to defend their point with ten-men.

North Ferriby United continue to struggle following relegation and a 2-0 Church Lane defeat to Chorley leaves them bottom of the pile – two points adrift.

Jason Walker gave the visiting Magpies the boost of an early 4th minute lead.

Josh Wilson then confirmed victory for the visitors with a second goal 11 minutes from time.

Darlington FC and Leamington shared a disappointing goalless draw at Blackwell Meadows.
