Round Up: Vanarama National League

By Steve Whitney

Dover Athletic are joint top of the Vanarama National League after inflicting a 4-0 drubbing on manageress Chester FC at Crabble on Saturday.

Tom Shaw`s final game in caretaker charge of the visitors was not a happy one.

They trailed to a 22nd minute header from Giancarlo Gallifuoco.

But they capitulated after conceding a second just past the hour-mark to a Mitch Pinnock effort.

Nortei Nortey made it 3-0 with 70 minutes gone on the clock and Mitch Brundle ensured a comfortable triumph for Chris Kinnear’s men with a fourth 7 minutes from time.

Top of the early-season table on goal difference, however, are Aldershot Town after they earned their first ever victory at the International Stadium against Gateshead - the Heed`s first home defeat of the campaign to date.

The only goal of a hard-fought game came in the 83rd minute when Gateshead `keeper Dan Hanford flapped at a corner and Fabien Robert hooked the ball in for his first goal for the Shots.

Dagenham & Redbridge are third – a point behind the top two – after inflicting a first defeat in seven games on FC Halifax Town at Victoria Road.

The Shaymen conceded their first away goals of the season to go 2-0 down with a quarter of the game gone, thanks to Craig Robson and Corey Whitely, and were 3-0 down by half-time through a Scott Garner own goal in first half injury-time.

Matty Brown headed in his second of the season in the 71st minute but it was too little, too late for a Halifax fight back.

Maidstone United moved into the play-off positions after beating Macclesfield Town 4-1 at the Moss Rose.

The Silkmen started the day above Jay Saunders’ side but were put to the sword by Zavon Hines’ double after 11 and 65 minutes, Alex Wynter in the 24th minute and Joe Pigott 16 minutes from the end as United opened up a 4-0 lead.

Macclesfield replied through Koby Arthur on 80 minutes but the visitors had already ensured a third win in a row.

The derby at Kingfield between Woking and Sutton United saw the Cards earn a good 2-0 win to move to within a point of the U`s in the table.

Sutton had chances in the opening 45 minutes, most notable through Kieran Cadogan, but the half finished goalless.

And then 4 minutes into the second half, Woking broke the deadlock when, following a corner, Regan Charles-Cook`s header was eventually deemed to have crossed the line after a lengthy consultation between referee and his assistant.

Inih Effiong came close to adding a second for the hosts in the first minute of stoppage time when he rounded Sutton `keeper Jamie Butler, only for Simon Walton to block the shot on the line.

But in the 5th minute of time added on, Woking did grab a second goal when Butler saved Effiong`s initial effort, only for Charles-Cook to pounce to net the rebound and his second of the afternoon.

Bromley pushed Solihull Moors into second-bottom spot after a 1-0 win at Hayes Lane.

Bromley started brightly and played some neat football, but found Nathan Vaughan in the visiting goal in good form along with his solid defenders.

And it looked as though Liam McDonald`s side would earn a useful away point.

However, in the 86th minute, the hosts finally made their pressure tell to win the game when Iffy Allen sent fellow sub George Porter through to beat Vaughan.

Guiseley AFC looked to be heading for their first away win of the season under new boss Paul Cox as they led 1-0 at the Racecourse Ground against Wrexham well into stoppage time.

But Sam Wedgbury volleyed the equaliser in the 6th minute of time added on to deny the Lions.

Raul Correia had given the visitors a 27th minute lead when he helped Will Hatfield's deflected long-range shot over the goalline.

Ironically, Cox`s former club Barrow AFC also earned a late point at the Furness Building Society Stadium against bottom side Torquay United, who were watched by their new manager Gary Owers for the first time.

Torquay went ahead inside 5 minutes as a poor clearance from Stuart Moore in the home goal allowed James Gray space and time to open the scoring.

But as stoppage time ticked in, Byron Harrison grabbed Barrow`s equaliser with his first goal of the season to date.

Former Coventry City and Scotland star Gary McSheffrey scored his first goal for Eastleigh but his side had to make do with a point from a 2-2 with AFC Fylde at the Silverlake Stadium.

Another of Eastleigh`s experienced players, Reda Johnson, headed the Spitfires into the lead in the 26th minute, before Henry Jones equalised for the visitors right on the stroke of half-time.

McSheffrey then fired Richard Hill’s men back into the lead 9 minutes into the second half.

However, Jordan Tunnicliffe pulled the visitors back into the game on the hour-mark to set up a nervy finale, but neither side were able to find a winner.

Ebbsfleet United were held to a goalless draw by ten-man Tranmere Rovers at Stonebridge Road.

The visitors had Jay McEveley sent-off 5 minutes into the second half for a second yellow card offence but despite bossing possession, the home side couldn't find a way through.
