Round-Up: Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying Round

By Steve Whitney

Evo-Stik League North newcomers South Shields, who are the current Buildbase FA Vase holders, knocked the other non-League side who won at Wembley in May – FA Trophy winners York City – out of the Emirates FA Cup in their Third Qualifying Round tie on Sat

In front of a crowd of 2,806 at Mariners Park, the now Vanarama National League North visitors were beaten 3-2 by a team two levels below them in the Pyramid.

The hosts were ahead in the 9th minute when York `keeper Jon Worsnop pulled down Jamie Holmes and Carl Finnigan converted the resulting penalty.

Home skipper Julio Arca then exchanged passes with Robert Briggs to add a second goal for Shields after 35 minutes.

It wasn`t until 14 minutes from time when skipper Sean Newton replied for the Minstermen.

But then 2 minutes later Jon Parkin snatched an equaliser for the visitors - but inevitably they conceded again as Arca's stoppage time corner was headed in by Gavin Cogdon – cue scenes of delight in the home crowd.

Evo-Stik League Premier side Stourbridge have become experts at causing FA Cup upsets in recent years and they were up to their tricks again on Saturday as they beat nine-man National League North outfit Alfreton Town to book their place in Monday`s Fourth Qualifying Round draw.

Alfreton were down to ten-men as early as the 19th minute. Tom Allan couldn’t control Paul McCone’s long clearance, Jordan Archer raced onto the loose ball and the defender brought him down.

With Allan being the last man and Archer bearing down on goal, the referee was quick to show a red card.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors 5 minutes later as Bradley Wood slipped, allowing Matt Dodd to run towards the loose ball on the edge of the area.

Wood stretched a leg out to try and redeem himself but Dodd went down under the challenge – the official judging that the Glassboys winger got a toe to the ball first and Wood was given his marching orders.

Stourbridge took full advantage from the resulting free-kick, Tom Tonks bending an effort around the wall past `keeper Chris Elliott.

Josh Green added a second goal but Alfreton never gave up though and Craig Westcarr netted from the penalty spot with the game at 2-0 to keep a replay within reach for long periods before Stour completed the win late on through Leon Broadhurst.

Stourbridge`s league rivals Nantwich Town haven`t quite got the Glassboys pedigree as cup giantkillers, but they achieved a notable scalp when they knocked out another National League North side in Nuneaton Town at the Weaver Stadium.

The Dabbers took a 28th minute lead through David Forbes and then eventually doubled that on the hour-mark through Joel Stair.

Sean Cooke virtually made sure of the upset with the home side`s third goal in the 62nd minute, although Greg Mills threatened a comeback when he reduced the deficit 14 minutes from time.

National League South side Poole Town were dumped out of the competition by Evo-Stik League South Premier side Slough Town at Arbour Park.

The Rebels trailed at the interval to a goal from Warren Bentley, who capitalised on a mistake from Mark Nisbet to score in the 30th minute, but they managed to turn things around in the second half.

Chris Flood headed James Dobson’s cross into the far corner to make it 1-1 on 53 minutes.

And the home side’s pressure finally told when keeper Nick Hutchings allowed George Wells’ shot from distance to slip through his fingers into the net.

Poole`s league rivals Wealdstone also suffered a surprise defeat as they were beaten at Leylands Park by Bostik League Premier side Burgess Hill Town.

The Stones, who have shown decent league form of late, were poor on the day, but looked as though they had got away with a replay.

That was until the 90th minute when Cheick Toure volleyed home a tremendous effort to win the game for the Hillians.

It could be argued that Burgess Hill`s league rivals Billericay Town came into their tie at Bulpit Lane against National League South side Hungerford Town as favourites.

But they certainly will be now after sharing a 1-1 draw to earn a replay in Essex on Tuesday.

The Crusaders took a 35th minute lead when former England defender Paul Konchesky was adjudged to have handled in the box and Stefan Brown duly converted the resulting penalty.

The ambitious hosts levelled on 65 minutes with a goal from close range from Ricky Modeste after Billy Bricknell`s header had been brilliantly saved by Marcus Beauchamp.

However, Hungerford almost snatched victory at the end but twice Billericay`s experienced goalkeeper Alan Julian pulled off fine saves to keep them in the tie and in Monday`s draw.

The National League North and South will have plenty of other representation in the draw.

Kidderminster Harriers made progress after a dogged and determined 1-0 win at Ebac Northern League minnows Newcastle Benfield.

A second half goal from Joe Ironside eventually earned the National League North side their passage into the next round

Goals from Jack Broadhead and Kabongo Tshimanga ensured Boston United booked their place in the next round and avoided a banana skin at Toolstation Northern Counties East League side AFC Mansfield.

Broadhead's 13th minute breakthrough set the tone for a dominant United performance, with the previously unbeaten hosts finding the Pilgrims a tough nut to crack.

Tshimanga sealed the victory with a well-taken second goal 5 minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game.

A goal in the 83rd minute saved Chorley`s blushes at Hallmark Security League minnows Ashton Athletic.

Nick Haughton popped up to win it for Matt Jansen`s side.

Another National League North side through are high-flying Brackley Town, who beat National League South visitors Braintree Town at St James`s Park.

The Iron, who sit second in their division, found the Saints – third in theirs – too strong on the day.

The Saints took the lead as early as the 3rd minute through Glenn Walker who finished past keeper Nathan McDonald at the third time of asking, his initial header from Shane Byrne’s first time cross and follow-up shot both being repelled at close range.

In the second half, defender Luke Graham’s header and Ellis Myles’ fierce shot put the Saints in an unassailable position before the hour-mark.

Aaron Williams headed a fourth goal in the 66th minute set up astutely by Adam Walker while Karl Olyide fired in a late consolation for the visitors.

National League South side Havant & Waterlooville are through to the next round, courtesy of a 4-0 win over ten-man Hayes & Yeading United.

Rory Williams, Jason Prior, Ryan Woodford and James Hayter got the goals to see off the Evo-Stik South East outfit who had Spyros Mentis dismissed 5 minutes into the second half for a second bookable offence when the scoreline was 0-0.

Goals in first half injury-time and second half stoppage time saw Bath City progress at the expense of National League South rivals Hemel Hempstead Town at Twerton Park.

Just when it looked like the first half would end goalless, Anthony Straker found space down the left to cross for Frankie Artus to net with a header.

City looked dangerous on the break and in the final minute should have added a second only for Jamie Lucas to fire wide of an open goal following great work from Nick McCootie. However, they weren’t punished for the miss as 2 minutes later Andy Watkins volleyed home number two.

And in the final minute of stoppage time, Jamie Lucas drove home City’s third from 20-yards.

Oxford City left it late to book their place in the next round, eventually overcoming Bostik League Premier side Leiston with two stoppage time goals.

The visitors had led twice but were left with no time to respond when Ezra Forde struck in the 91st minute.

Leiston took an early lead against the run of play, Byron Lawrence's effort taking a significant deflection off of Godfrey Poku on its way into the back of the net.

The lead only lasted for 10 minutes, the Hoops drawing level thanks to Joe Oastler's firm near post header from an Eddie Jones corner.

Despite having less of the play, Leiston once again took the lead with 15 minutes to go as the lively Matt Blake latched onto a ball down the right channel, producing a lovely first-time finish into the far corner.

The goal sparked the Hoops into life, equalising for a second time in the 81st minute through Pearce's half volley from 12 yards.

The hosts continued pressing and were rewarded in the first of 5 added minutes as Forde's backheel found the bottom corner.

Forde then turned provider, squaring to an unmarked Rob Sinclair who tapped home to put the game to bed with a minute left to play.

Truro City made history by progressing into the Fourth Qualifying Round with a 4-1 victory over Bostik North side AFC Sudbury at a wet Treyew Road.

It was the visitors who took an early lead when a deep cross picked out Ricky Evans who guided the ball home.

Chris Todd finally levelled matters and Truro were able to build on it after the break as Aaron Lamont put the hosts in front on 53 minutes.
Some neat play then led to the White Tigers` third goal as Stewart Yetton found Connor Riley-Lowe and his cross was gobbled up by Tyler Harvey to give the keeper no chance.

And the scoring was complete late on when Yetton got in on the act from close range to make it 4-1 and secure our historic passage into the next round.

Dartford are also comprehensively though to the next round after demolishing Bostik Premier side Needham Market 6-1 at their Bloomfields home.

It was virtually all over bar the shouting at half-time, courtesy of an Alfie Pavey hat-trick for the Darts in the 21st, 35th and 45th minutes.

Tom Murphy added a fourth 4 minutes after the restart and the Darts could even afford to miss a 55th minute Elliot Bradbrook penalty before Sam Nunn reduced the deficit on 66 minutes.

And then an Andy Pugh brace in the 71st and 90th minutes completed the rout.

Another tie involving teams from the same divisions saw Concord Rangers triumph 3-0 at home to Dorking Wanderers.

Amos Nasha gave the Beachboys a 17th minute lead.

Steve Cawley added a second 6 minutes into the second half, but Dorking had a great chance to get back into the tie when they were awarded a penalty 6 minutes later.

But Tom Tolfrey skied the ball high over the bar.

And on 66 minutes, Jordan Cox made sure the hosts went through with a third.

Concord`s league rivals Hampton & Richmond Borough edged through 3-2 at Evo-Stik League South West strugglers Cinderford Town.

But an upset looked on the cards as the Foresters took a first minute lead through Declan Morley-Lyne and, after Taurean Roberts had equalised on 33 minutes, led again, courtesy of a 62nd minute Andy Lewis penalty.

The battling Beavers won it though with a brace in the 81st and 88th minutes from Brendan Kiernan.

Chelmsford City made progress 2-1 at Melbourne Stadium against Evo-Stik League South Premier side Weymouth.

Chris Dickson’s brace proved enough for Chelmsford, opening the scoring from the spot in the 58th minute after he was felled by Ashley Wells, before sending a brilliant second into the top corner with 10 minutes left.

Weymouth’s Harry Baker then grabbed a late goal to set up a nervy finish, but the Terras couldn’t force a replay.

An all-National League South tie saw the Sussex derby at Priory Lane between Eastbourne Borough and Bognor Regis Town go the way of the visiting Rocks 2-0.

Ollie Pearce proved to be Bognor`s cup hero, bagging a brace in the 12th and 49th minutes.

Those having to try again……Evo-Stik League Premier side Stafford Rangers looked as though they had done enough to pull of something of an upset against National League North visitors AFC Telford United.

Leading through Richard Batchelor's early headed goal, it wasn`t until the 84th minute when John Marsden grabbed the Bucks equaliser.

National League South high-flyers East Thurrock United were also surprised to be held to a 2-2 home draw by Bostik Premier side Harlow Town.

Sam Higgins gave the Rocks an 18th minute lead that Alex Read cancelled out on the half-hour mark.

Just 4 minutes later, Xavier Vidal put the Hawks ahead.

But on 66 minutes, Harlow`s Craig Pope is dismissed for a second bookable offence in conceding a penalty which Higgins duly converted.

However, 13 minutes from time, Higgins had the chance to take the Rocks through when they were awarded a second penalty, but his effort was well saved by Ben McNamara.

National League North rivals Leamington and Gainsborough Trinity were unable to use the cup as a welcome distraction from their respective league positions as they played out an uninspiring 0-0 stalemate at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium, resulting in a long trip up to Lincolnshire for a replay on Tuesday night.

Trinity were reduced to ten-men 8 minutes from time when Jonathan Wafula received a straight red card for a challenge on Junior English.

Two other National League North rivals unable to find a goal between them were Harrogate Town and Bradford Park Avenue, who will meet again on Monday night after a goalless draw at The CNG Stadium.

And another draw between two National League North teams saw neighbours Stockport County and FC United of Manchester battle out a 3-3 Edgeley Park draw.

In front of a crowd of 3,034, it was a `game of two halves` as County led 3-0 at the break with goals from Matty Warburton after 19 and 31 minutes and then Jason Oswell on 41 minutes.

FC United pulled one back through Jason Gilchrist on 57 minutes and Tom Greaves made it 2-3 on 71 minutes.

And Steve Irwin levelled matters from the penalty spot in the 84th minute after Greaves was brought down in the box.
