Roberts Joins - Hornby Stays At Swansway Chester Stadium

By Steve Whitney

Chester FC have confirmed the signing of midfielder Gary Roberts and the extension of goalkeeper Sam Hornby`s loan spell.

Thirty-year-old Roberts (pictured) from nearby Blacon has signed a short-term deal at the Swansway Chester Stadium.

He came through the youth ranks at Crewe Alexandra and went on to make over 100 appearances for the Railwaymen – scoring 11 goals.

He went on to feature at clubs such as Yeovil Town, Rotherham and Port Vale in the Football League.

Roberts also played for England at under-16, 17 and under-19 levels; as well as being captaining the England under-18s.

The Chester local began the season as Southport in the National League North – scoring 4 goals in fourteen games.

On the signing, CEO Mark Maguire told the club`s official website: “It’s safe to say that Gary Roberts name has been mentioned hundreds of times over the last couple of years and that he has a large number of people willing him to do well at the club.

“Equally, there is an awareness of a colourful existence that Gary has led in recent years. What is absolutely consistent though is everyone’s assessment of Gary Roberts’ footballing ability.

“On that basis; with completely open eyes, and several honest conversations, he has been given the chance to play for his hometown club.

“What happens next will be largely down to Gary and will either be seen as a stroke of genius or madness. It certainly won’t be boring!”

Chester have extended Sam Hornby`s loan deal from SkyBet League Two side Port Vale for a further month.

Hornby has featured in all six Chester games following his arrival at the Swansway Chester Stadium.

The 22-year-old is in line to feature once again for the Blues tonight against AFC Fylde.
