The club have confirmed Peter Beadle’s replacement after he left Edgar Street last month despite three back to back titles.
Head of Football Tim Harris says the club have the right man for the job.
“We were inundated with excellent applications for this role and drew up a shortlist of four candidates to interview,” Harris, who worked with Richards at Gloucester, told the club’s website.
“All of them were very impressive and had skills which would fit with the new football strategy that the club is moving forward with. However, after lengthy discussions, it was felt that Marc was the best candidate overall and that he would be offered the role. We are delighted he has accepted it.
“Marc is a highly respected coach and an intelligent, progressive, forward-thinking young man.
“I believe he will prove to be an excellent fit for this football club and for all we are looking to achieve.
“As well as his most recent role managing Gloucester City in the National League South, he has considerable experience in the National League North, and is also Assistant Director of Elite Sport at Hartpury University and Hartpury College.
“Marc has a Masters in Coaching Science, a Post Graduate Certificate in Further Education, a BSC (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science and holds the UEFA A Licence.
“He has helped develop many players over the last decade who are now playing professional football.”
